The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Actually, I was just gonna say screw the 5x5 with legs.

Think I'm betting off doing regular deads or sldls? SLDL strength is up there now, did 5x5x275 today with a warmup or two.

I don't really want to do fronts, either. Argh. I hate that rack, it's really terrible. I failed today doing fronts of 185 pounds, which I've never done before, all because the rack is too ****ing narrow. What do you think about thrusters on leg day -- bad idea?

Just trying to think of something different to do.

I dont think you should replace squats with deads or even replace deads with squats, im gona agree with mixmaster

and you said your bench max was 265 and you said you did 185x5x5 which i guess means 2x5? if so i did 185 3x5 the other day and my max is 225 so correct me if im wrong but your max seems a little wacky

    Thrusters, no.

    Lunges, yes.

Mike, did you read this stuff?

    And here's the money:

You want to be above 70% of your max lifts at a min. Anything else is a waste.

Nice 5RM on the Squat. Set up your 5x5 so that you're setting a new PR on week 3, maybe 4, and if you're stud, week 5. Then you drop the volume to a 3x3. Rest, rinse, repeat.

    Five sets of five, beatch.

Incidentally, one does not always lift as much as one can possibly lift.

Okay, so main lift 5x5, accessories 3x8 (or something like that). I don't know if I really give a **** about periodization or any of that stuff. Yeah yeah, I know I'll get yelled at, just pretty sure it ain't happening.

Vary up your training. If you do 5x5 for every single exercise, you will surely stagnate soon. You don't need that much volume; you're not going to be moving enough weight to make the exercises worthwhile. Also, 3 upper body days and 1 leg day? That's a bit imbalanced. Remember, this is not an endurance contest!

well ok I did 185 5, 5, 5, 4, 3. So in all you can do 3 more reps then me on 185 and your max is 40 pounds more? i still think that sounds a tad bit off.

I'm guessing your 185x5x5 is much closer to failure than his.

Dude, two things (before I decide to get insulted):

    (1) You don't always go into the gym and lift as much as you can. I probably could have done 195x5x5, but I'd never done 5x5 before and wanted to test it out. My max dead is 385lbs, but it's not like I go into the gym and work my way up to 385lbs every time I dead. That's a bad way to get injured or overtrain.

    (2) Second thing: most people can't always lift their max. I'll be honest with you, I doubt I could bench 265 today; probably more like 250. Your max is the most you've ever repped, generally something that you've worked your way up to with the intention of setting a new 1RM. I have a friend who hit 315 a year ago, but hasn't been able to fully rep it since. His 1RM is still 315lbs.

That's about as much as I'm going to defend myself from you, since the people who matter probably think my 1RM should be a helluva lot more than it is. 265 ain't diddly.

The more I read about 5x5 the more I realize I had no idea what it was before I posted this. I just figured it was an easy system to mark progression.
