How do you do barbell curls?

Using a straight bar do you:

1.)Use a wide grip, narrow grip, or medium grip?
2.)Switch your grip width each set?
3.)Switch your grip width each week?
4.)Use one and only one grip almost always?

this is a matter of personal preference, what do you do?

and i've always been curious about this, because my buddies with huge biceps use wide grips, while i've seen research that says narrower grips stimulate more growth....

Research showing narrow grips stimulate more growth?

Could you direct me to that research, please?

It doesn't really matter. Use a grip that you are comfortable using.
    Squats work better than supplements.

This is how I do barbell curls.......

I slap two 45`s on the bar and curl until i can`t curl no more..........

Plus I glance around the gym and look at peoples faces when they don`t think I`ll be able to do it........

Stray, not to doubt you at all. Just to make sure, are you doing the curls correctly or is everyone looking at you because you swing so hard you are about to fall over? Just wondering because I see that quite often.

    1. Grab the bar
    2. Keep elbows at your side
    3. Curl bar to chest.
    4. Lower bar back down to thighs.
    5. Repeat

If you lean foreward, back or move your elbows from your side you are useing leverage to your advantage.

I saw someone doing just that in the gym this morning. He looked like he was rowing a boat! Funny, he seemed really impressed with himself too...

I just use the most natural feeling grip myself.

Yes I was joking.....I never look around at others unless they are in my way....I`m too busy concentrating on myself....well maybe I`ll sneak a few looks at a cute girl doing lunges

and no I do not swing the weights and then try and get under the bar like some daym limbo dance, but I also don`t use so perfect form........

So to all you beginners I would reccomend you follow mesmalls advice until you get comfortable then you can experiment with looser form and more weight or slower/fast tempos........

Generally, I use a straight bar, plant my feet close together--it forces you to be more even with your application of force--tilt my torso about 30 degrees forward--so that there's resistance even in the top contracted position--and keep my elbows locked in place at my side. I never let my arms fully extend, nor let my upper arms move, and typically use a 2-1-2 cadence.

Thanks for all the replies fellas, but it seemed like most people read the title of my post and replied to that....without reading the actual post! Only 1 person mentioned grip width which is what i was really interested in.

The grip doesn't matter, as I said in the second post in the thread.

Where is the research you mentioned?

Okay then...I amend my answer to: whatever grip feels natural and comfortable.

No research, because it's not true.

But then, you already knew that, didn't you, Paul?

Where is the research you mentioned?
Muscle & Fitness published an issue over the summer that had a pullout on the 10 best arm exercises (5 bicep & 5 tricep)....for each exercise they had a short write up. Under bicep curls, they claimed that using a slightly narrower grip activates more muscle fibers according to some scale with an abbreviated name which I can't recall off the top of my head.

EMG--which while useful, is fairly flawed IMO.

I can curl more with a narrower grip, so couldn't that be evidence that a narrower grip is recruiting more muscle fibers?

EMG--that's the one! I'm not really familiar with how it works....

You can't assume everything is propaganda because it is published, there is a lot of bullshit out there, but you can't always be closed minded.

I can also curl more with a slightly inner grip, it feels more natural than the wide grip.

    EMG = flawed.

That 'narrower' grip would vary by individual, wouldn't it?

More often than not, if it is in a muscle magazine, it is worthless information. The pictures are usually nice, though.

Use the grip you like, add weight or reps, and don't worry about the little stuff.

    Worry about squatting.
    Squats work better than supplements.
