I've been doing my shrugs on shoulder day, about 3 days before I train back, but I'm wondering if I should train traps on back day?
Also, are the rhomboids muscles deep tissue muscles which are underneath the trapezius??
I think I was born without traps..
Traditionally speaking, the trapezius is a "back" muscle. However, doing shrugs and other trap work with the shoulders isn't a problem. You may in fact find that it provides an easier back workout. Schedule them when you can.
However, do keep in mind that properly performed DL's will target the traps with a shrug-like movement at the lockout--- so if you're DLing on back day, you may not even need to bother with shrugs. I know my heavy back days, which normally involve heavy deads, don't usually require much in the area of direct trap work.
All the best,
I like to focus on them in my back training for a couple of reasons.
1. I am training chest, shoulders and triceps together on my push day so it would be hard to get in traps there..
2. I feel my traps progress great with deadlifts in back day and a set of shrugs at the end of my back workout..
Personally, I do them on shoulder day. I'll do my presses, then traps, and then finish up with lateral and front raises.
May you be in heaven an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
do them with back, they are a pulling muscle group.
I prefer to train them with back ... since they are part of my back.

I'm fuked after the work i do for my back so much that heavy shrugs are a 'no-no'. Also, doing shoulders after chest is a no-no cause my tri's are nacked. Therefore, i do shoulders on a separate day, and stick in shrugs for good measure. It's working fine. My friday session takes 10 minutes since i started this 1 set malarkey. Before that it took about 25mins, but i wasn't happy with this cause after trainning since Monday (with wednesday rest) i'm fuked and can't really bothered with much of a workout so this is perfect.

Im in the same situation as Hulk here. Although i find that shrugs do not have to be in a routine if you are doing deadlifts. Highrep deads hit the traps very good. If you really want to do shrugs and you can on back day i would advise you to do them then since they are pre-exhausted from other back movements.

Do you think you could describe the movement at the lockout which hits the traps? I'd like to see if they hit my traps, I've recently started doing deadlifts, and my last set was 225lbs for 5 reps. It was rough!! I'll do 3 sets at the end of my back workout, progressing up to that wieght...However, do keep in mind that properly performed DL's will target the traps with a shrug-like movement at the lockout---
Uhhh, I just read my post and I'm laughing now that it says a shrug like movement at the lockout. I'm assuming I should shrug at the completion?
If you can't knock out a dozen or so chins, your either too fat or too weak, take your pick...
your traps go pretty far down your back, so they are part of your back and therefore i do them with back.

It's all down to personal preference and recovery.
