The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

You've been doing good with the strength gains bro. Let me add a small bit of advice on the benchpress...

I started out with what I would say a very strong bench for a 7th grader pushing about 185 almost my first time out. I had crap form for every lift I ever did while lifting for football, because they teach numbers and not form (at least most schools do). I was benching over 250 with crap form, probably worse then you think yours is. I then started lifting on my own, with some form advice from members of this board and my bench went from 205x4 to 315x1 in about 7-8 months. Form is a BIG part of a BIG bench, without it I wouldn't have ever been attempting a 355 pound flat bench (which I never did get to attempt due to injuries).

Get the forms down first, worry about strength later. If you do it the other way around you'll be working very inefficiently and you skyrocket the chance of injury.

I know your a smart guy and you've seen your way around the gym a time or two, so I'm not trying to talk down to you just offering some advice!

Awesome, I like any piece of advice I can get my hands on. I credit concentrating on form on DE days to my squat PR yesterday.
My biggest problem right now is I'm not entirely sure what proper bench form actually is. I've read lots of articles, but it just doesn't seem to click. For some reason the squat feels so much more natural to me. If anyone has some good links on proper raw bench form, please share!

The problem with that is, there is no "correct" form.

I have very broad shoulders and a bigger then average frame, so my maximum power range is a wider bench. To be honest though, I can probably bench 95% of my 1RM moving my hands 2" either in or out so its not like its going to matter that much. Thats "fine tuning", you first have to get it dialed in enough to where you need to be looking for that last 5% if you follow.

Best way to do that is to toy around with different grips/groves.

    DE Upper
    Flat bench
    8x3 @ 105 (60%)
    1 @ 135

    Incline DB press
    5x45
    5x45
    4x45

    Elbows out extension
    11x15
    8x20
    5x20

    Seated cable rows
    10x90
    10x100
    8x110
    6x110

    Notes
Pretty solid workout. I really focused on getting my back tight, shoulder blades pinched together and shoulders pushed back. It made a huge difference and the 135 went up very smoothly. Not as fast as I would have liked, but it didn't stick and it felt comfortable. BTW elbows extensions rock. Apparentyl my left tricep is way weaker than my right

Thanks. Elbows out are about the fourth one down here http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=459460 I did them on a flat bench instead of an incline.

Thanks, it made a huge difference. It was also a big confidence booster, which I need for bench.

    Random Men's Fitness Bull****

I went to the gym with my old man tonight. He was wowed by all the machines so I kinda just went around with him and did some high reps on everything. I tried to teach him to deadlift and he kinda laughed at em I got him to at least move off of the leg extension machine to the hack squat machine. It's a start. I also convinced him to try the trap bar deadlift, which he at least tolderated a few reps to try it out. Who knows, maybe he'll like them.
I tweaked a weird muscle in my triceps/shoulder. Iced it and it feels better, but we'll see in the morning. I don't want to screw up my progres....

Squats were good and the 260 went up easy I was supposed to do 215 for deadlifts, but 225 was on the bar. It seemed very easy; I'll be maxing on sunday to see where I'm at My abs were still sore from the rollouts I did on SUNDAY so I decided to go easy on them.

pullthroughs are definitely great. I like doing them with doubled light bands... definitely fun. You can never run out of band tension. Just make sure you have them wrapped around somethin solid.

Big o Boy: I don't have any bands, but that is a good idea. I might try to hand some weight from it somehow. My gym might also have one of those plate loaded cable machines, though it's not likely.
