The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I tried for a 3rd rep with 450 on front squat, got pretty close but had to dump it. Kinda felt like crap today all around, not sure why.

Felt a little better this week, but still not 100% due to maxing on close grip again just 4 days ago. I'm going to start hitting heavy singles every week and try to add 5 pounds each time. I know I'm by far stronger than I've ever been before, I just need to get used to the heavy weight again.

Thanks Brian. To be honest it was really depressing having 625 feel so heavy today. I didn't think I'd lose that much strength as I've still been training heavy sumo regularly.

Felt really good today. Was so close with the third rep of 285 on military. Probably shouldn't have tried 300 after that heavy grinder.

Body weight was 235 last night. Weight gain has slowed down a lot but I'm going to keep at it until I hit a 500 bench.

That's what I'm afraid of since I've I started pulling sumo about 4-5 weeks ago. I will be switching to conventional for the remaining of my meet prep when I'm close to 6 weeks out. Next week I'll pull conventional but it's a deload, so I'll be working on speed and technique.

Yeah I have no idea how some guys can not train a lift for months and come back stronger than ever. I know there are guys out there that deadlift once a month and still pull 700+. I've found multiple times over the years that I have to be hitting a specific lift heavy fairly often to maintain/gain strength.

The 480 was close, came off my chest just fine, but my spotter had to give me a little help at my usual sticking point. To be honest I'm a little surprised I still feel pretty good despite benching pretty heavy twice a week.

This was the best bench session I've had in a long time. 455 x 2 felt awesome, I could have easily hit 10 more pounds for a double. Something started to cramp in my right pec and I could feel it during the first rep with 460 so I stopped there and dropped the weight to be safe.

My lower back still isn't back to normal but sumo pulls usually don't seem to bother it nearly as much so I kinda went balls out and tried to pull a PR. Last time I pulled from 4" I got 700 so 725 was probably a little too much of a jump. I got it off the blocks but stalled out around my knees. On the positive side, even with the 725 miss, my form looks really, really good. My entire back is literally as straight as a board.

Back still feels like shit. Have an appointment to get things checked out tomorrow.

Did some speed deads with 405 but they felt like crap. Lots of leg curls/extensions after that.

So we finally weighed the thicker bars at my gym today, turns out they are 5 pounds less than I thought. I'm not super surprised but that means almost everything recorded from the last couple years is 5 pounds more than it should be, lol.

I wasn't planning on going this heavy but 460 felt really good so I took another crack at 480. The weight felt good in my hands and didn't crush me by any means, just couldn't get past the usual sticking point about half way off my chest. I'm sure being drunk all day Saturday and feeling like general shit all weekend definitely helped.

Forgot to mention I've started dieting this week. I've peaked around 236 lbs. I really wanted to hit a 500 pound bench first but hopefully I can keep making some progress while dieting. I'm going to take it slow like I usually do, and maybe trim off 10 - 15 pounds. I plan on competing at 220 in October so I'd really like to be walking around close to that so I don't have to cut much/any weight.
