The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

"Best" training advice you've ever been given

Soldier, who will remain anonymous- “You know the best way to get bigger?”
    Me- “No, how?”
Soldier- “You have to train different exercises all the time”
    Me- “Really? How’s that work?”
Soldier- “Well, if you do that, then your muscles don’t know whether to get bigger or smaller… so they just get bigger”.

    So that’s how it works…
    Weight: 194.0 lbs.Height: 5' 11"
    Raw PR's 425/340/534
    Goals for '10:
Put on size and git Strong(er)
Raw Goals: 450 Squat, 365 Bench, 570 Deadlift

    I wouldn't call it aweful.

I've been told before, that doing the same workouts over and over can become stale, and your body can actually become accustom to it; I think that many of us like to switch up our routines from time to time. Maybe its more mental, I dont have any proof to debate it either way, except to say, when I do try new routines, I do feel like I am getting a better workout that I had. Not to say that my old routine was bad, its just something different.

But, enough of that. Best thing someone told me was.

Hmm... I know what he meant by it. Believe me, I follow a WSB routine and know all about changing it up. I was just being sarcastic saying it was the "best" training advice I'd ever heard.

The part I was laughing about is highlighted in italics above.

Be consistent. Don't miss workouts. Always give it 100% otherwise you're wasting your time and energy.

Oh, it's being sarcastic. Damn, now I feel like an idiot.

Best advice was: "Don't go heavy, it's hard on your joints."

Dude at gym (to his buddy): "Man, NO-Xplode rocks! This ***** is great!"
Me (kinda wanting to be a pain in the ass): "Really? I heard that it's just a money maker for the muscle mags and supplment companies. No real science behind it."
Dude: "That's bull. It's how I got this big." (In fairness, he is a big guy)
Me: "I read some about that stuff and it seems like bunk. But to each his own."

    Two days later.

Dude: "Told you this stuff works. It's right here in this month's Muscle & Fitness." He proceeds to show me the 4-page ad in M&F.
Me (stifling a laugh): "I stand corrected. Maybe I'll pick some up." (...and continues with dl's)

The best advice? Always try to improve on your previous week. One extra rep, one extra pound. Always push for a little extra every week. No exceptions. Routines don't get stale, your body doesn't get used to it. People simply stop pushing as hard as they should. You want to see improvements? You need to improve on your routine. Simple and essential advice.

From some guy in a bar:

"The best way to get big is to eat 4 raw potatoes every day. Doesn't matter what else you do, just eat 4 raw potatoes and squat. Don't bother with any exercise, just squat. Since 90% (i swear he said 90%) of all muscle is in your legs, if you squat, you'll get huge. Eat 4 raw potatoes and squat."

This coming from a guy about 5'8 and 160lbs. I thought about asking if that's how he got so massive, but I don't even bother to talk to most people because of **** like that.

guy doing tricep kickbacks - oh man, this exercise is killer. you should really start doing it!

    or

dont go all the way to your chest on bench because it makes the muslces get very bulky due to the amount it tears your outer pecs.

Best advice was not advice at all.
It was me seeking out ways to better myself on my own
by searching and searching until I stumbled upon this forum
from then on I learned to manipulate my weight
    gain mass
    cut fat
now I can shoot half-court shots like regular shots, it's pretty awesome.

Mine was in High School. I was doing BB incline and one arm was going up real easy and the other would barely move on the last few reps. My coach told me if I would sleep with the other hand outside the covers tonight that the other arm would catch up. Started switch hittin and I haven't had any problems since.

So if I sleep with my left arm outside the covers, it'll get stronger? I'm confused.

The best advice I ever got was last year from my friend. Here are his exact words, "Dude, you should start lifting weights again dude."
    Currently:
    age: 15
    height:5'8.5"
    weight: 143
    bench: 185
    squat: 225x15
    Goals by January '08:
    weight: 145-150
    bench: 210
    squat: 250x10
