I am considering buying an olympic bar and weights and have a few basic questions.
1) Would buying a set with squared off edges alter the range of motion in deadlifts? For example the 20KG disks have squared edges and may have different diameter to the usual round 20KG olympic disks?
2) Are plastic coated weights less durable then metal?
Thanks in advance.
Why on earth would you want square weights? Especially if your doing olympic lifts. Think out it. When you come down on your dead, and you hit the edge of the weight with the floor, that could come back and smoke you in the shin.
We have 20kg olympic rubber weights at my gym and I love them. I don't know how old they are, but there holding up fine

The weights are 12 sided, has anyone deadlifted with these and had any issues?
A square has four sides.
A dodecagon has twelve sides.
anything that isn't round is a pain in the ass for deadlifting

A child does not learn to squat from the top down. In other words, he does not suddenly make a conscious decision one day to squat. Actually, he is squatting one day and make the conscious decision to stand. Squatting precedes standing in the developmental sequence. This is the way a child's brain learns to use the body as the child develops movement patterns. Therefore, a child is probably crawling, rocks back into a squatting position with the back completely relaxed and the hips completely flexed, and stands when he has enough hip strength. This approach makes a lot of sense and can be applied to relearning the deep squat movement if it is lost. -Gray Cook

Thanks heaps guys thats answered the question perfectly....round it has to be, shame there are not any round ones on e-bay here in Australia.
Ohh and thanks betastas for letting me know the name is dodecagon, i doubt the people selling them even know that!
I agree. Round plates are the only way to go.
I think they should just bring back the giant iron spheres of old.
