Trip the ER screwed me over!!!! *Rant*

I had to go to the ER about 2 1/2 weeks ago with a lasceration on my knee from falling. It was split wide open and looked like it needed stitches. They initially told me it would be $373.00 base price and could vary. So i ended up staying all day and all they really did was give me caprisun, they cleaned it out with some sterile water and I got a tetnis shot .
THey did'nt want to put stitches in because they did'nt know if itwas infected. THey told me to come back after 2-3 days and get the stitches put in. After a few days the cut looked like it was healing well on its own so I did'nt go back (THANK GOD)!!!
Well about a week ago I got a bill from them for $570.00 and I was fine with that. But now I just got another bill from the ER for $370.00. I called and they said that they are seperate from the hospital and there are different charges.

OMG!!! I"M SCREWEd! I already have 4500 dollars in credit card debt and now this!!! WTF!!!!

See now with insurance you would only end up receiving a $10 bill.

    ...

    ...

Then two weeks later you'd receive another $10 bill.

Yeah I have no insurance. I'm a part time student working full time trying to make it on my own. My rents make over 100k together and I get NO help from them. They said I could have insurance if I were in school full time. But how am I supposed to go to school full time and work full time to pay my bills. My mom thinks I should just go into firefighting and drop out of school. She just wants to give me the boot so she wont have to worry about my finances which she does'nt.
THe only real thing that is keeping me together is my girlfriend. Shes going to Univeristy of FLorida making straight A's pursuing nursing meaning eventually she will make good money. SHe tells me that we will pay my debt off when shes done and she'll basically take care of me so I can finish school. I hate that this is what I'm relying on keeping myself together. But I have nothing else.........

Why do you hate the free market so much?

You had a choice: you could get health care and pay for it, or you could not get health care.

Just to what I do with things I dont like to pay.

Stick them under my "do not pay" box. I basically shove the bills under my bed and pile socks, dirty underwear and random objects over it until they arent visible....then I spend 2 hours keeping myself really really busy....masterbating, watching TV, throwing stuff at people etc. Then, I look at that big heaping pile and I get sickened so I cover it up with more socks and cleaner underwear to hide the smell.

After a while I forget all about the bills that are under that mess, because I'm more worried how that mess got so bad in the first place and how on earth I'm going to clean it up whenever I get around to it.

It works for a few weeks. Then I just burn the letters and say I never received them.

Pay them 5 bucks a week until it's paid off.

Yes, I'm serious. Family members of mine have paid off medical bills like that. Supposedly they can't really say anything if you're paying them on a regular basis.

Yeah I think medicaid/medicare for the most part is a bunch of bull****. I mean this is the first time I've been to the hospital in almost 10 years.

I hate how insurance doesn't cover some things also. You pay insurance and never use it. So say you want something not covered, they should be a little more lienent.

Trust me when you are done with school and have a job, you will be happy that our medical care is not government control. Do not listen to those socialist tree huggers from Chapel Hill.

Same. I've only been to the doctors a handful of times...I rarely get sick.

I feel for you fighter. Unfortunatly theres really not much you can do. I guess you could try to fight it or get it reduced or something. Outside of that, I guess you'll just have to make smaller consistant payments....say $40 a month or something. Do it like a credit card if you can, throw any extra money you can to pay it off between months.

But first I would try to get it reduced or waived. You'd be surprised how much persistance pays off.

My family has also had the same problem of paying "double" bills like that. My sister is a very sick person and has been in and out of the hospital numerous times. They'd always bill us for the emergency room and then tack on a whole bunch of extra's, ambulance fee's, doctors fees, short notice fee's etc. My dad/mom had to take out a loan to pay off everything....and they are still making the payments.

Just dont feel like you have to pay it off ASAP or all at once. Stretch it out, they can wait. Good luck.

+1 to the phone call idea, but on a different tack...

...to your CREDIT CARD company. You see, there are very few times in your life when a phone call can easily save you $100+, but credit cards are one of them.

Let me see if I can explain this clearly - when you call a credit card company, there's a man who's job it is to "save existing accounts". Let's take Capital One as a banal example. This means that if you call up and say "Listen, Capital One-man, I'm looking at this statement and the rate is really high and I've always been a good customer and I would like to keep my business here in the future. What can you do for me?", there is a man who's job it is to basically give you enough incentives to remain a Capital One customer by changing any of those magical numbers on your statement.
This may include a temporary reduction on your APR or something else similar - the bottom line is that you save a bit of $ and they save a customer. Everyone walks away happy. Heck, if the reports I've heard are remotely accurate, the guy who saves you as a customer even gets a mini-bonus. It's called something like the "retaining accounts" section of the company, though I'm not 100% sure on that one. I'll edit this later with a more accurate title/etc.

That's not how my medical insurance works. It's just like any other investment.....you really have to look at what you're buying. There are some terrible policies out there. But others are quite comprehensive for a reasonable price.

Yup, exactly what I was thinking while reading this.

The Canadian health care system has it's ups and downs. Long waiting lists are the absolute worst part of our health care.

IMO, the only good side to privatized health-care is that the rich people can get whatever they need done really fast. Poor people are pretty screwed though.

Can you not get a basic health insurance plan at your job? You are working full time after all. Most colleges also have a basic health insurance policy as well. Why not look into that?

Gosh, it's weird how we have all of that stuff, but our country isn't nearly as healthy as almost every other OECD country!

My initial conclusion is that perhaps technology and pharmaceuticals aren't so important for being healthy, especially given how expensive they seem to be.
