The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Increasing bench Strength.

My current max is 250lbs. I would like to break the university record at my school by next April. The record stands at 385lbs. That gives me exactly 13 months to get my bench up 136lbs. Possible?

That's a pretty far goal..Are you willing to sacrifice the next 13 months to focus on increasing your overall strength?

Yes sir. I am making the switch to a powerlifting routine within the next month. If all goes well I might be able to train with Chris Rodgers over the summer. I know its a far fetched goal but I have a few tricks up my sleeve

I think it will be tough especially considering you plan on cutting for awhile still. I also realize you have made strength gains while cutting, but the leaner you get the harder this will become. Even if you bulked your mind out I dont think adding 135lbs raw in a year is possible. With a shirt possibly but doubtful. I would love for you to prove me wrong though.

You can absolutely do it, but you have to commit. And, you have to keep your eyes on the prize. Cutting and building strength are 2 things that don't go together. If you want to add 135 lbs to your raw bench, there will be no cutting. You have to ask yourself which is more important to you. Looking good to maybe impress some girl, or something like that, or benching 385? Whatever answer comes to mind first is the one. Here's my opinion, if you have a fat wallet, you too, can be fat. If you have a skinny wallet, the girls won't care what you look like anyways. Get a big bench. SFW! And don't wait to start a PL program. Start now.

if you can use a shirt then it is very possible and wouldnt be to difficult.
if you have to do it raw, it will be very difficult, 10 lbs a month consistantly for a year is very tough, let me refraze that extremely tough, at least naturally, ive know a guy to do it juicing though.

cmon paul you can get that easy. Lift hard and heavy while leaving enough time for rest and you'll get it.

very possible, I went up 105 lbs my Sr. year in high school, went from 245 to 350 on my bench and had to cut back a month before I graduated due to overworking. I would do a heavy bench on Mon. and a lighter bench on Thursday. Hit it hard and it's possible.

If you can use a shirt, it's very possible fro you to reach that goal. If not, well, I won't say it's impossible, but it would have to be a single minded goal and you would have to sacrifice a lot, including getting "cut" to achieve it.

Oh snap. I have a little bit left on the cut. Then we will see what happens. I dont know if 385 is that insane at a 275lb Bodyweight. I can't wait to find one thing out though. I have never lifted weights in caloric excess. Entire lifting career has been in deficit. Hope the strength goes up when I start bulking up.

You can do it. My bench shot up near 100 pounds in the last 3-4 weeks. I used the westside barbell chain technique and also J.M. presses and dropped my reps to 3-4 from 8-10. I couldn't believe it. Granted the chains cost $200 (I hope my wife won't notice) but the explosive power they built was well worth it. My bench technique also changed drasticly. I was tought to arch the press going up and to use more chest then tricepts. Now I bench strait up and keep my elbows in to utilize my tricepts alot more. Drastic difference.

seriously though, it can be done. diet will be key, I can't believe you've never lifted weights with caloric excess. good look to you!

O.K. not trying to be a jerk, but what do you bench now? Is the 100 pds w/ a new shirt? That's a huge jump, explain it more.

an arch can easilly give you 20-30lbs
    wider grip maybe 10-20lbs
so you have th possibity of 50lbs with just your form.

Gee. I put 80 lbs on my bench the first time I used a shirt! I'm a little skeptical of a 100lb gain in only 4 weeks, even with technique changes. Still, I wouldn't expect any results like that. However, not training in a caloric deficit will help your strength immensely.
