Has anyone tried this with any success?

My body apparantly does not digest whey protein very well. It causes cramps and diarrhea. Anyways, the guy at vitamin world suggested taking some papaya enzyme pills about 20-30 min before my shake to aid in digestion. I haven't tried it yet because I have work and other social activities so if it doesn't work I don't want to get cramped up in the middle of work and such. Was wondering if anyone had similiar problems and tried this.

He also suggested switching to egg protein. I assume whey is better, but why?

whey is not better then egg protien just different
whey is quick digesting so should be taken before, during or after a workout

egg is slow digesting so should be taken as a meal or idealy as a last meal before bed so your body does not go in to a fast as quickly

I know nothing about papya or its enzyme other then tastes gross

Beano, Acidophilus, Peppermint. When I bulk many nutrients, protein and otherwise come from supplements. Sometimes the old digestive track gets a little sketchy from all the protein & carbohydrates. Try it out, the stuff is pretty cheap if you do not mind generics.

Well I'm trying the papaya right now so hopefully it works. Otherwise I will have to switch proteins most likely.

I had similar reactions the first couple of times I drank a shake. My guess is your body isn't used to this kind of protein and needs a little bit of time to adjust. Are you drinking it RIGHT after working out? One time I did this when I just started drinking shakes and something went wrong in the ol' gut because my farts and burps smelled like rotten, festering chocloate (it was chocolate whey).

Solution: Give it some time, and maybe don't drink it real fast, especially if your heart rate is very high.

No it upsets my stomach no matter when I take it, and I use to drink them all the time. It's definitely something in the whey.

I must have missed above where you said you weren't lactose intolerant..

Could be how much you're taking.

I'm taking one scoop in milk.. it's 24g of protein. Only one shake a day.

The papaya seemed to help a little, but I don't know if it was the papaya itself or just a little luck. My stomach still got a little 'gurgily', so it didn't fix the problem entirely.

You may have gotten a bad batch. If it's contaminated you could be having mini food poisoning episodes. I'd try something different, or a different brand.

I've tried three different brands, in water and milk, on both full and empty stomach, alone and with things mixed in it (peanut butter, bananas, etc). All of it upsets my stomach.

Now what I'm confused about is that I tried a proto-pure bar today, which has 32g whey, and it did not upset me at all.

The only thing I can think of is that it's the sweetener in the whey. Is it artificially sweetened (as 99.9% of them are)? Google 'sugar alcohols' and see what turns up

I have no idea. What is the artificial sweetener in them, I'll go check the label.

Edit* The powder I have (Precision Engineered) is artificially flavored/sweetened, but it doesn't go into detail as to what it is. The bar is also, so unless they are different sweeteners, I don't see how that could be it.

    Sugar alcohols aren't artificial sweeteners.

Well either way, the bar says it contains them and that they may upset the stomach... but the bar is fine.

Well the papaya did work.. I took 5 tablets before my protein shake and it settled my stomach.. it didn't completely negate the upset stomach but it wasn't bad at all.

But I tried the bar WITHOUT the papaya, and it didn't bother me at all. I can't figure out why other than one is liquid and the other solid.
