The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Barbell vs Dumbbells. Whats better?

    Hello,

I normally use dumbbells (DB) to train the chest but lately I've switched over to using the barbell (BB) mainly because I feel like I can push harder using the BB.

Is there a big difference in using one over the other? I know that dumbbells cause you to use stability muscles etc but wondered what differences (if any) the BB and DB have in terms of strength/size increase.

If I did barbell flat and used dumbbells decline I suppose I'd get the best of both worlds ... what does everyone else do?

    Thanks.

Neither is better - they both have a huge variety of uses. And variety is good.

:withstupi if youve reached a plateau, its always good to switch up for a few weeks. eg. you plateau at 225 on bb flat bench. try using dumbells for a while then go back and test your BB bench again. this doesnt work for everyone, but it helps most people.

    Thanks for the replies...

Anthony - Do you use both in your routine or do you "see how you feel" on the day?

Use both, either in the same routine, in alternating routines, or periodized routines, where you go maybe a month or two one way, and then a month or two the other.

I used that originally ... hard to wade through all it all when you have limited time.

But I understand what you are saying

I use dumbbells and barbells for a lot of things, most of which are not bench pressing.

If you have imbalances between your right and left sides, it's better to use DB's till the imbalances are corrected. Then again, like ElPietro said, it's good to use both.
