The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I have figured out how to wrap them. My main question was in regards to when during a bench session to use them and what lifts they are most effective with.

Example: ME Day...Would I work up without wraps to a 1rm, then add in wraps and repeat or would i do multiples with them?

and in regards to what lifts they are most effective with -
Flat BB, board press, floor press, skulls, etc.

Thanks buddy. Also, I can't lift for a bit now because I somehow managed to pinch a spinal nerve. I will live my powerlifting dream vicariously through you for a while.

Dang, hope you heal up quick! As far as when to wrap them, do it whenever you want. It's not like a knee wrap, where it's going to give you spring by wrapping the joint that is moving. The equivalent to that would be wrapping your elbows. I typically just warmup to 135 or so and then usually put them on for 185 or whatever. It is really up to you. Also, you can use them on any movement where you feel you would benefit and you want to keep that wrist straight/supported. I use them for all heavy presses and squats.

Trained at Gold's today because I had to come home right after work to take care of something.

    Bench press(middle finger on rings)

    4-5 warmups

    Lying Tricep ext to chin

    1 warmup

    3 sets of 10

    Reverse pec deck

    1 set of 20
    2 sets of 15

Since I trained at Gold's today on a better bench that I could arch on, I decided to go heavy and see how it felt. The rep with 250 was slow, but I don't think I have paused much more than that and I haven't been able to flat bench heavy in the last 2 months. Also, I weigh 170 now and I was 180-181 when I hit 275 for a touch and go PR. So all things considered, I wasn't too dissapointed.

Next week I plan to take an actual deload week and then I will come back hard the following week and hopefully work myself back up into PR territory at the end of that cycle.

Did you hurt yourself too, Chris? What's up with the knee and free squatting? I was out with a strained quad for about 3 1/2 weeks. Sucked.

I slipped at work and my knee that has had "issues" for the last 14-15 months or so swelled up and was killing me. With ice and Ibuprofen the swelling went down and I could work without a problem, but it still feels a bit weak. I can pull fine, but am gonna squat light for a bit and slowly bring them back up to be safe.

Yea, I haven't trained in gear in like 6 months+ or something. I have been going to the gym after doing hard labor all day or sometimes after hard labor+school. I have lost about 10-11 lbs in the last two months. All that considered though, my strength isn't down a ton, but it is down a bit. Just trying to keep plugging away and messing with my exercise selection and volume to see what works.

On a side note, one of the trainers at the new gym I joined like 6 weeks ago said hi to me last night in between one of my sets. So I took off my headphones and she said that I always train very hard and that she was very impressed. She competes in bodybuilding or figure or something...there is a pic of her with a trophy at the front desk. It's a good boost of confidence when you are feeling weak from your lifts being down, lol.

Also, all the trainers in this gym are pretty damn good. They have their clients doing deadlifts, cleans, OH presses, squats, all that good stuff and some of them are good with kettlebell stuff too. One of the female trainers was pulling close to 300 the other day when I was in there too and she wasn't very big.

Oh yea, so my morning weight is ~170 right now.

I think the best part of it is that there is always a ton of good looking girls in there when I go...including a lot that train really hard(deadlifts, presses, squats, kettlebells, etc.) It definitely motivates, lol.

LOL, I think 370 now, I have lost some weight!!

If you put it all together on the platform, your total PR will be huge! If either of us could bench things would be a lot better, lol.

Some safety inspectors shut down my job this morning so we left early. This gave me time to go to the gym before school. A few weeks ago we got rained out and I went to the gym close to the same time. There was this old timer there who I believed to be in his late 60's, early 70's....but could have been 90 as well, lol. That day he was squatting and I see him walking out and having pretty damn good form with like 185. I'm thinking, this guy is awesome and I hope to be doing that when I am his age. Few minutes later, 225 on the bar, few minutes after that, 275, then a little later 300 and he bangs out like 3-4 sets of 5-6 reps with it. All reps relatively close to parallel. All he used was an old leather belt from like 1940 and he had nothing on his knees(no wraps or sleeves). I was very impressed.

So today, I am pulling and he comes up to me after I do 425 and he says, "you deadlifting?" I said yea and he asks me if I am European or Russian. I said haha, no I am American(if I was Russian I would be so gangsta-strong). Then he says oh, you are very strong(he had a crazy-strong accent like he was from Russia or something). I told him I competed in powerlifting and he asked what my best squat was...I told him in a powerlifting suit I had hit 700 in a comp and he lit up and said, "you are young and strong, keep it up! I am too old for that stuff." So I told him how impressed I was when he was squatting, but he just kept saying "God Bless you, you are very strong". When I had more weight on a bit later he asked me if I wanted to borrow his straps, but I told him I was good with the chalk. Good fella. God Bless that guy doing his thing so late in his life(he told me he was indeed 70 years old!!).

Great you connected with the older/wiser lifter, he sounds like a great elder, and he deserved all the respect you gave him. Glad to see you back to the heavy duty max numbers.
