The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Yea, just always try and get some extra work in for the upper back, rear delt/rotators.

Sweet, I'll definitely work in some rear delt stuff. Should I be trying to push myself with the rear delt work (face pulls/ reverse fly/ etc) or just be working real light like a warmup for my pressing?

Good to see the assistance work in there. I'm excited to see your heavy session on Saturday!

Before a session you can do them real light just to loosen the area up. When you are actually working them you can increase the weight a bit, but I wouldn't do them for low reps. I do sets of 12-15 typically, sometimes 10 if it's a superset.

    5/15
    Heavy SQ/DL

    Reverse band squats(Ace briefs/Canvas straps up/belt)

*all sets done with one set of reverse minis doubled*

    615x1

    *add knee wrap*

    685x1
    715x1

    Deadlift(conv/raw/belt)

    405+40 lbs Chainx1
    405+80 lbs Chainx1
    405+136 lbs Chainx1
    405+164 lbs Chainx1(PR?)
    410+192 lbs Chainx1(PR)

Treadmill turned off- 3 rounds of 80 steps forward/80 steps backward

Pretty sick training session! I didn't feel so great warming up, but I seemed to get stronger on each set. The only time I have setup reverse bands that way I used 2 sets of minis and was like 10-12 lbs heavier. That day I hit 775x1, so today was technically a PR. Next week I would like to use two sets and see how I do.

The pulling felt awesome. When the bar started to slow over my knees, my hips really came forward much better than normal and I was able to slam through the sticking point. I was able to hold the lockout on each rep with ease, even holding the last one for a good 5 count...which was ~600 at lockout. Things are lookin good for 9 weeks out!

Started off feeling like crap. I have a nasty sunburn from playing softball and then goin to the beach for a bit yesterday. The shirt was killing me, lol. I am happy that I made the adjustment after the first two singles and smoked the last. Next week I will go heavier and hit the top end more.

Happy with the Push presses. Today was the first day I tried them with a belt and elbow sleeves. I have never pushed 185 OH before with any bar. Next week I will switch to the Log for OH's and see how it goes. Tomorrow I rest and then Saturday will hopefully be some gangsta squats and pulls.

    Heavy SQ/DL\

    Squat(Ace briefs/Canvas straps up/belt)

*all sets done against one set of Strong(blue) bands choked*

    510x1

    *add knee wraps*

    600xmiss(about half-way up)

    Deadlifts(conv/T-rex straps up)

    405x1

    *add belt*

    495x1(felt like garbage)

    *suit off/belt only*

    405x1
    495x1(much better)

    Wild Pulls in rack(mid-high shin/raw/belt)

*all sets done with one set of minis doubled out in front*

    405x1
    495x1
    525x1
    555x1(10 lb PR/grinder!)
    485x3(10 lb PR)

Good and bad today. I got a little too greedy on the squats. I wanted 600 real bad, but I really should have taken ~550-560 with a knee wrap first and felt how it went to decide to try 600. I came out of the bottom a few inches and tried to grind through it. I was pushed forward a bit from the weigt and didn't have enough to recover. Oh well, still gets the job done of being Max Effort.

Then trying to pull in the suit pissed me off since my pulling has been feeling real good lately. I got way out of position and the bar got bound up in my thighs. I will either try a looser suit or to pull sumo in the T-rex in a few weeks, otherwise I might be pulling raw at the meet. The Wild pulls went well though and totally kicked my ass!

Thanks man! Check Marcus' journal from Wild Iron Gym. I got the idea from him. I basically set up a midshin rack pull. Then I doubled the bands around the power rack out in front of me and then back around the bar. This makes it so the bar wants to pull away from you and really makes you focus on pulling back and getting the hips through...which is my biggest weakpoint in the deadlift.

Your posterior chain continues to impress the hell out of me! I don't know how you can have 700+ on your back and lockout 600 in the deadlift. Where do you think your raw deadlift is these days? I've decided to compete and do a raw ironman. Can you believe the Canadian raw amateur deadlift record in the 165s is only 379.5?! I never thought I'd have a Canadian record but I'm going after it. You better not come up here and make it out of reach, ya hear!

Good workout. Hey do you ever feel exhausted trying to deadlift right after squatting? I mean I know you're a PL and this is what you must do at meets, but I can't seem to train both movements seriously in the same session.

I pulled 520 today, but it wasn't as easy as when I pulled 530 which is my best pull to date in a belt. Go smash that record!

Not really on my ME days because my heavy squatting is low volume. I typically warmup with singles and usually just go for a PR of 1-3 reps. When I squat and pull raw on the same day and do more volume/reps on raw squatting it bothers me more to deadlift after.

530 is just sick, dude! I'd love to be able to pull 500 at some point in my life somewhere around this weight. Nice call on pulling heavy after tweaking something in your mid back, lol. I'm assuming it's nothing serious?

Haha, you will man if you stick with it...but you will likely gain muscle in the process and weigh more. Who knows. And yea, I never said anything I do makes sense or is the "smart" thing, lol. I doubt it's anything to worry about, it was uncomfortable as hell though!

Good session, hope your back is okay. I hate when that happens to me.

Nice training lately Chris. Real big squats and pulls. Do you plan to squat in gear every week, just change it up with bands / chains, etc?

Thanks Mike. During most of my heavy training cycles since I started competing in multiply gear I have typically squatted one week straight weight and then following week with bands and/or chains. I would do all that squatting in at least briefs and many times leading up to meets in full gear. I personally never felt a good carryover from doing box squats and then transitioning into full gear free squats. I seem to squat more weight when I practice free squatting more often.

Schools out on Tues/Weds nights for the summer, so I decided to add back in another SQ/DL day.

    405+164 lbs chainx1
    410+192 lbs chainx2(PR)

I pulled that same weight off the ground for a single a few weeks ago, so I figured I had to at least match it from the pins, lol.

Did some bench assistance stuff on Thursday. Nothing crazy worth mentioning. Then yesterday I squatted and pulled.

    6/5
    Heavy SQ/DL

Squat(1-ply Denim brief/Ace suit straps down all sets/belt)

*all sets done against one set of Blue(strong) and Green(average) bands Choked*

    235x1
    325x1

    *add knee wrap*

415x1(ugly/spotter tapped my chest on the way up)

    *tightened my belt one notch*

    425x1(much better)

    Reverse Band deadlifts(raw)

*all sets done with one set of Blue(strong) bands suspended/full deload at lockout*

    405x1
    495x1
    525x1(PR w/no belt)

    *add belt*

    550x1(PR?)
    565x1(PR!)

    Treadmill turned off

4 rounds of 80 steps forward/80 steps backwards w/short rest
1 round of 40 steps forward/40 steps backward

Totally shot after that!! I was much happier about the squatting after I came back and hit the last one much stronger. I tried a different gear combo just to see. Seems to make weights feel heavier on the unrack, but I got some good pop out of the bottom. Not sure yet. I am becoming Starvin Marvin status, so I had to make my belt tighter than normal since my waist has shrunk. I was very happy with the reverse band pulls since I suck at those.

I am starting overnight work tonight so I had to adjust my sleep/training schedule today. It was just me and one other guy benching today(another lil guy, lol). I actually felt real weak warming up, but was happy to get the work in that we did. We got help from a thrid guy by the time we got to board presses.
