The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

I got back from Vegas last night. Back in the gym today. I had an awesome time out there. I got in a few workouts there, but nothing worth mentioning(I squatted in a smith machine)

    8/2
    Bench assistance

    Decline press(pinky on rings)

    1@095x15
    1@135x10
    1@185x5
    1@225x3
    1@225x6(felt easy/no spotter)

    Flat DB press

    1@65'sx3

    1 drop set:

    1@85'x7
    1@65'sx5
    1@45'sx7

    BB rows(overhand/from floor)

    1@135x8
    1@185x8
    2@205x8

Plate loaded lat pull(underhand)- 3 sets 10-12 reps

Pec deck- 2 sets 12 reps

Decline Kaz press(very short rest)- 4 sets 12 reps

    Curls- 2 sets

Felt good to be back and see my buddies. I had an amazing time in Vegas, but I definitely missed being able to really train. Tomorrow should be fun when I get to do some real squats again. I was only eating like 2 huge meals a day in Vegas, but somehow I came home weighing the same as I did when I left.

I think we are squatting with bands tomorrow.

    Heavy squat

Squats(All sets walked out of squat rack)

    1@135x3
    1@185x2
    1@225x1

    Add single-ply Inzer Fusion

    1@225x2
    1@315x1
    1@375x1(belt)
    1@425x1(straps up)
    1@475x1(knee wrap/short wraps)
    1@515x1(same wraps/Ginormous PR)
    1@405x5(same wraps)

    Leg press(narrow)

    1@180x5
    1@270x5
    1@360x5
    1@450x5
    1@540x8

    Leg ext- 3 sets

    Abs- 5 sets

Called a crazy audible right before this workout. I was supposed to do my normal Ace briefs, monolift, band tension, etc. I just got an urge to try and see what I could do in a single-ply suit, walked out, short wraps(USPF/USAPL style). I haven't attempted to do that in years. The most I can remember doing like that was ~350-365. The suit I was using was actually pretty damn loose for single ply(and a deadlift suit). I got it on by myself in ~3 minutes and the straps are kinda loose. I think if I tightened up the straps and got used to the heavy walkouts/setup, I have a good shot at breaking 600@165 like this. I think I had a little left in the tank tonight, but I didn't want to push it too much on the first try. One thing I know is it's much easier to break parallel in single-ply than in multi-ply.

I really have no clue how I am going to be training my squat now. I might continue the single-ply for a bit or maybe stick with the multi for a while. It was a pain in the ass to walk that crap out and setup wide, but it was fun as hell. We shall see.

Thanks Stump. Depth was good. As I said, it's easier for me to break parallel in the single-ply. I also just looked on the website and noticed you can use 2.5 meter wraps in USPF. Next time I'll use those and they will give me even more pop.

In my single-ply days I had no problem making depth is USAPL meets and they are even stricter than USPF.

I'm chaing my bench days around a bit. I'm going to try and bench heavy(shirt work, boards, etc.) on Thursday with the rest of the crew and start doing my assistance on Sunday mornings with the new Sunday crew. So for now Monday will be a rest day. Today, I was handed a new shirt to try by my boy Spero, so I had to try it. I was in no way prepared to go heavy(just off vacation, wrist was shot so I hadn't touched a heavy weight in 2 weeks, just woke up, lol). I have never pushed up and locked out 385 without going off a board. My PR with a touch is 365. With some practice and some regular heavy top end work, I will break 400 in this shirt. It is nasty! I think I may have to get the sleeves pinched a little, but the chest plate is gangsta tight! I haven't had a tight, gangsta shirt in forever(if ever), so it'll be like I'm learning all over again.

    So, Thursday I'll try again.

Yea, it has to be the best there is. It's the one Rychlak and Kennelly have hit their biggest benches in. Most of my team has been using them for a while. One guy on my team just traded an F6 someone was looking for straight up for this shirt. Luckily for me it was too small for him, so he threw it my way.

I haven't been this uncomfortable in a shirt in a long-ass time. Once I can deal with the pain, I will own 4 plates.

    Heavy deadlift

    High Box squat(SSB/Raw-diggity/no belt/~16")

    1@155x5
    1@205x5
    1@245x5
    1@275x5
    1@295x3
    2@315x3

    Deadlift(conventional/Single-ply Metal Deadlifter-ridiculously tight)

    1@225x1
1@315x1(straps up from this set on)
    1@405x1(belt on this set on)
    1@515x1(10 lb conventional PR)
    1@545xmiss(1" above the knee)
1@545x1(40 lb conv PR/5 lb better than my sumo!!!)

That last one was a crazy-ass grinder. I was shaking violently after I got above my knees, but somehow I locked it out. My buddy got it on video, so when he posts it I'll post it here.

    Power shrugs(deadlift grip)

    1@245x5
    1@335x5
    1@425x5
    1@475x5
    1@515x5

(Lockout from top of the kneecap)
    1@515x1
    1@605x1
    1@655xmiss(1" off pins/shot)

BB rows(wide overhand from floor/done inbetween shrug sets)

    1@135x5
    1@185x5
    1@205x5
    1@225x5

Seated cable row off weird machine- 2 sets

    Pull thrus- 1 set

    Abs- 3 sets

I am glad I am not training tomorrow! I got my ass kicked tonight. The 545 pull was the hardest deadlift I have ever done. The first try I didn't pull my shoulders back hard enough and got stuck rounded over after it flew up to my knees. Thanks to my training partners pointing that out, I fixed it on the second one and was in a better position to grind the lockout. I think I would have lost the second attempt if I didn't have 15 people screaming at me to lock it out. They kept yelling, I kept shaking and eventually I was standing up straight with it. I'm glad my grip was solid because it was a tough fight, but I still managed to lock it out solid and hold it before giving it the signature East End Barbell drop from the top.

Thursday I bench. I'm not sure if I'll use the shirt or not. I'll see how I am feeling.
