The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Heavy squats

Squat(All sets walked out of the monolift)
    (Single-ply denim briefs/singlet)

    1@235x3
    1@325x1
    1@375x1(belt)
    1@425x1
    1@505x1(self knee wrap/felt like crap)

Here I decided to get my knees wrapped by my buddy Spero and use the monolift(no walkout)

1@535x1(20 lb single-ply PR/very strong and deeper than the 505)

    SSB Box squats(Raw-diggity/~14" box)

    2@155x3
    1@205x2
    1@245x2
    1@295x2(belt)
    1@315x2
    1@335x1
    1@355x1(PR off this height)
    1@245x15(PR)

Ghetto abs off plate-loaded lat pull- 3 sets

    Leg ext- 2 sets

I am 90% positive that I will not be walking the weight out at the Asylum meet. I will be doing the single-ply division, but I will use the monolift on my squats. I think I would need more practice walking out heavy weights and I am having a tough time getting my feet out where I want them. If sometime in 2008 I decide to do a USPF meet or something I will do a whole training cycle of walked out stuff. I will hoever still be doing some lighter walkouts(like the SSB work and some moderate volume work I'll be doing in single-ply poly).

I watched the video of the 535 and I was very happy with it. My best ever squat in briefs/wraps(double play Ace briefs) is 550x1. Today the 535 came up strong and fast. In the next few weeks I'll work up a few heavier single in the same setup and see where I'm at. I think I have a good shot of being ~600+ at the meet if things go well. I'd be really happy with that. After those I kicked my ass a bit with the SSB. I was happy with those sets as well.

The plan is to wake up early enough this Sunday to train bench with the Sunday crew. No shirt work, but I may do some floor presses or something.

How come your not doing plain ol heavy walkouts? I tried them last week and they really helped. I just recently started getting stuff above 300 and it felt like a CRAP LOAD. I did walkouts with like 400 and now that 300 comes up and outta the rack like nothin.

    Nice PR btw, damn.

It's not that it feels heavy, the stepping out wide like I do is just dangerous and I would need to slowly work up to trying it with high 500's or 600+. I don't have a lot of meat on my lower body, so I don't need something to go snap before these meets.

I forgot to give out the award for tonight. A lot of guys weren't going too heavy, but one of my partners(Jay) hit an all-time squat PR. He hit 915 in full gear(straps down). He's a 308 lb lifter on the way up to 1000 lb squat. A close second has to go to one of our newest training partners. He weighs ~240 and has been competing in OL for a few years. He just converted to powerlifting and came to use after just getting some squat briefs. He has gone up to 530 for some strong doubles(last week). Today someone gave him a loose canvas to try(he easily broke with 5 plates). He worked up to 725 with no wraps and came up strong. Very soon he will be the next 800 lb squatter on the team and if he gets a tight suit and works his top end I think he could go over 900 within the next 6 months. So Brian gets a close second.

You're exceptionally privileged to have such a great group of lifters around you Chris. Keep the info about the awards in here as it makes for good reading!

Thanks Franco and you are absolutely right about getting to train with all these freaks.

    Heavy bench/assist

    Floor press w/chains

    1@045+2 CHx5
    1@135+2 CHx3
    1@185+2 CHx2
    1@185+3 CHxmiss
    1@135+4 CHx2
    1@135+5 CHxmiss

    Mccaslin/Asylum board presses(pinky on line/triples)

    1@185x3(on 3-board/warmup)

    1@225x3,3,3(3 brd/4 brd/5 brd)
    1@225x3,4,3(3 brd/4 brd/5 brd)

The second set I wanted to do 3 reps, 4 reps, 5 reps, but the last rep was a grinder.

    DB Floor press(elbows in/palms facing)

    1@60'sx5
    1@75'sx5
    2@85'sx6(PR)

    Seated row(off weird free-motion apparatus)- 4 sets of 10

That was it. I need to get used to waking up and training early because I didn't warm up too good on the floor presses. For some reason I was only counting half of the actual chain weight, so I thought I was weak as hell(moreso than normal). When I actually figured it out half way through it wasn't too bad. My PR off the floor is 245x1 and the top sets today were pushing 300+ at lockout. So I guess that's around right. They kicked my ass so they served their purpose. The rest of the workout went well after that. We get some good work done on Sunday without staying in there for 6 hours, so that's always good.

Next Sunday I think I am going to shirt up in the single ply phenom and see what I can do. Tuesday will be some squatting and top-down deadlifts AKA Russian Car Accidents. :evillaugh

Today was a light assistance day for most. I'd say I was most impressed by my buddy Spero busting out like 8-9 reps with the 130's on flat DB presses. Tuesday should be some much more impressive numbers.

Damn man 535 in just single ply briefs and some wraps is gnarley squattage man. Real strong floor presses too I can't wait to start using chains, gotta get my ass to Southside.

nice **** man, for the boards, do you always do 3,4,5? or do you change it up to fit ur needs? Anytime I've done them with dave, we've always done 2,3,4.

    SQ/DL

Felt like garbage all day today. Almost left work early, but then told myself to stop being a little girl. Almost skipped the gym, but then told myself to stop being a little pussy.

    Squat(Raw diggity/narrow stance)

    1@095x5
    1@135x3
    1@185x2
    1@225x1(belt)

Pin squats(bottom up/bar touching top of the belly button/belt)

    1@225x1
    1@315x1
    1@365x1
    1@405x1

Raised it up 2 holes(~6") and just did a few lockouts to get heavy weight on my back

    1@495x1
    1@605x1

Russian Car accidents(top-down deadlifts in rack)

    1@225x3
    1@315x2(belt)
    1@405x2
    1@475x2(PR)
    1@495x1(PR/felt like crap)

    Elevated deadlifts(standing on ~4" mats/no belt)

    1@315x1
1@405x1(was gonna try reps/felt like crap)

Upper back cable pulls- 2 sets of 10

Today was just one of those days. I just didn't feel like putting any gear on, so I just kinda messeda round with some weird squat stuff before I deadlifted. I think the next time I do those top-down deads, I will go beltless and try and use a weight I can do ~5 reps with. I think those worked better because I can control the descent better which is key for the touch and go.

Thursday I'll do some bench assistance and then Friday I should be doing some heavy squats. I'll see how I feel by then.
