The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    7/21
    Bench assistance

    Speed bench

(The following sets done with a 25 lb plate suspended from mini bands on each side...50 extra lbs)

    95x3x4 sets
    125x1
    145x1
    165x1

    (Suspended weight off)

    135x3
    155x3x4 sets

    Incline DB press

    65'sx8x3 sets
    65'sx19(PR)

    1-arm DB laterals

    15x15
    20x12
    25x12

    Kaz Press(Smith machine)

    5 sets of 10

    H-rolls

    2 sets of 20

    Chins(OH)

    BWx10x2 sets

Benching with the suspended weight was very awkward. I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing. When I tried to do the reps fast I all over the place. After the first few sets, I started bringing the weight down slow and pausing and then exploding up. I liked that style better.

Tomorrow I think I will pull some heavy conventional reps from the floor and then hammer my upper back again.

speaking of upper back... how did you like the db retractions/contractions, db row style? I did 5 sets of 10 with those and my traps were on fire. I think they really did some good. I used relatively light weight with them (75s). Have yet to try the inclined shrugs.

I bet those speed sets were crazy on the stablelizzzors (however that's spelled). Probably like pressing water buckets.

I saw video of somebody doing them(I think Mike Wolfe). OF course he was using like a million lbs. Basically I doubled a mini band through a 25 lb plate and suspended it off the end of the bar(one on each end). As you move the bar it bounces all over the place and you have to stabilize. Seems like one of those things that will either strengthen a weakpoint or injure you. Fun stuff.

I just tried them the one time and went crazy light just to feel out the form. I will be doing them today after deadlifts and again later in the week. I'll see how they go.

Yea, I think it is definitely smart to keep them light and work up slowly.

    7/22
    Deadlift+assistance

    Conventional deadlifts

    135x3x2 sets
    225x1x2 sets
    315x1

    *add Metal deadlifter*

    315x1
    405x1(straps up/belt)
    495x2(missed 3rd/PR double)

    SLDL(raw/no belt)

    315x3
    405x4

    BB rows(OH/off floor)

    135x8
    185x8x3 sets

    Chins(OH)

    BWx10x2 sets

I also experimented with the leaning BB shrugs really light to learn the form. I ended up liking them best laying face down on an incline bench and shrugging from there. I kept the assistance work pretty easy today because on Thursday I have to take a physical test to try and get into the Ironworkers Union. I'll need my back to be feeling pretty fresh, so I didn't want to totally kill it tonight. I was dissapointed with the 495 set. I felt like I should be good for a triple, but the first rep was much too slow. I think I prefer pulling in the Fusion, but I tried out the Metal again tonight. The third rep only made it to just around knee height and I was shaking like a bastard and had to put it down. Next week I will start a meet deadlift cycle that I will most likely pull out of my ass. That's how I roll.

yeah i'm not convinced about the band suspended weight benches - not for nothing, but i'd rather see you doing heavy tricep work - close grips or some such

Thanks guys. I did really well on the test. Started off having to climb up a 12-15 ft column and then go across about the same distance and back down. After that it was a few different lifting things that were pretty easy. I'll hear back from them in 3-4 weeks.

Nothing too crazy today. Raw squat form is feeling a little better each time. His felt fine on those sets. I hammered my abs/obliques because I have really been slacking on them. Should be nice and sore tomorrow and screw up my arching ability on bench, lol. Oh well.

Tomorrow I plan to shirt bench and hopefully touch something decent. Saturday I will squat, but most likely just briefs.

My left shoulder wasn't feeling so hot coming in, so I wasn't sure what I'd be able to do. I did one set in the shirt and it went real well, so I left it at that. I like to go out on a high note, lol. AFter that I just did some raw board work. Since tomorrow I am skipping squats, I wanted to hit my upper back with some heavy rows, but my lower back said no.

I may go to the gym tomorrow and just do some rear delt/rotator work. I'll see how I feel.

I have decided on my next meet. I am 11 weeks out today, so on Monday I will start a meet cycle that will be 10 weeks long. I will be doing the Iron Asylum SSA meet on Oct. 11th. My goal is simple, 1600+ @ 165. I have the lifts in me, I just have ot prepare myself to be ready to perform and put them all together.

That being said, today I just went in and did some random stuff. My back was still feeling a bit smoked, but it didn't bother me squatting at all. As pathetic as it sounds, that is a good raw squat for me and it was very easy. My best set of 275 is I believe 8 reps in a belt. This was an easy 5 with no belt, no spotters, etc. I definitely had 8+ reps in me if I wanted to push. I know I should be able to do this considering my meet PR gear squat is well over 600, but I don't train raw often and frankly, I suck at it. I always say I get a lot out of gear in the squat because it is like a completely different animal from my raw stuff. I also have experimented with a new grip when I squat(tried it Thursday and today). It feels real good with the light stuff, I will just have to test it out in gear and see how it goes. It is basically a grip that I believe John Bott teaches lifters where you wrap your thumb and pinky under the bar. I usually just grab thumbless, but have been having issues with bar slippage and keeping my upper back tight. I'll test that out when I squat in gear on Tuesday.

    New training cycle idea:

    Mon- speed bench/assistance
    Tue- speed sq/dl/assistance
    Wed- Extra assistance workout/Conditioning/prehab-rehab work
    Thu- Heavy Bench
    Fri- ME sq/dl
    Sat- Extra assistance workout/Conditioning/prehab-rehab work

That's the plan for now and I'll make adjustments as the meet closes in.

Hey chris I took your advice about doing rack pulls from below the knee. I did them at mid shin, and DAMN, they are good. I've only ever done them just below, or above the knee, but these really hit my low back hard. Thanks for the advice dude!

Great workout today. How many weeks out from the meet are you?

Good to hear man. Rack pulls at mid shin are nasty. The meet is Oct. 11th, so starting today I have 10 training weeks and the 11th week is the meet week.

I know you didn't mean it that way. Since I have weighed between 140-170 the whole time I have powerlifted, I always get the "you are crazy strong for your size" thing or something very similar. When I met one of our training partners for the first time ~2 years ago, he nicknamed me "the janitor". I was squatting in gear and hit like 630. He was like, "he's gonna lift that...he looks like he should be the janitor" or something to that effect.

It's a good thing they have weight classes in powerlifting. One day I'll get bigger.

Felt pretty good tonight. I was sweating like a bastard, but managed to get some work done. Box squats felt weird at first, but got faster/smoother with every set. I used my new squat grip for every set and the bar wasn't rolling at all. I think this is gonna help me a lot.

After that I did some deadlifts. There were a few other guys pulling straight weight, so I decided not to use the chains. After some singles I decided just to try and get some rep work in. I felt some puke making it's way up after about rep 3, but managed to grind out to 8. That only matches my best PR with 405 which was done conventional, but that was the most reps I have done sumo. I would think I would be good for 10 without the puke sensation.

Tomorrow I'll do some ab work and whatever else at the commercial gym so I can stare at some chicks.
