The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

It was me, Bernor and the raw dog vs. the Mingo brothers and that other little speedy bastard. Todd tapped out after about 2.5 minutes of half-court basketball. I'd say he needs a little conditioing work, lol. We replaced him with the kid wearing moccasins and we won by one basket.

    Extra stuff

    Chins(OH) *SS* BB rows(OH)

    BWx5 *SS* 135x5x3 sets each
BWx5 *SS* 185x5x2 sets each(last set done underhand)

    Cleans

    135x1x5 sets
    155x1x2 sets

    Seated calf raises

Conventional Rack pulls(Raw/no belt/2-3" below kneecap)

    315x5x5 sets

    Abs/obliques

    9 sets of 12

    Back extensions

    BWx15x2 sets

    Chins(OH)

    BWx10x2 sets

Do work son. No real plan today except to keep myself moving and do some volume. Cleans were just to work on some form. I am terrible at those. The rack pulls I liked. I did each rep by squeezing slow off the pins til I hit knee height, then I would engage my hips and glutes hard and explode through the lockout. I kept the weight light since I just pulled yesterday. I figured they would serve as both active recovery and to teach me to excelerate through the lockout which is something I am bad at. Then I hammered my abs.

Tomorrow I should be doing some heavy bench sans shirt. I'm not 100% certain about the weekend plans yet. I might be going up to the Asylum meet which will mean I will miss Saturday's session and maybe Friday's. We shall see.

basket ball is great cardio and condition work, i want to start up with that again, i get to winded after doing an intense squat session.

question for you though somewhat related to the can you dunk thread, since you have a 705 equipped squat and probably a decent raw squat at your what 170lb-ish body weight, how high can you jump? your about my hight can you grab rim easily?

I think I have decent ups for a short, white guy. I can't easily grab the rim though. I think the basket we played on was a little shy of regulation and I could grab that, but it takes a running start off 1 leg. I think quads have a lot to do with jumping correct? I have weak quads.

I just watched the video. Nice work. The 405 looked easier than 365. Next time try them without the belt.

dude i had to bust it out, i went beltless on all the sets of seated GM's except for 315, and all the way up to 275 on zerchers. my back was killing me. after the meet i'll try them beltless as a max effort movement and see how i do.

    Heavy bench

    Bench press(no liftoff)

    95x5
    135x3
    185x1(paused)
    205x1(paused)
    225x2(paused)

    Floor rack lockouts(Med-narrow grip)

    275x3
    315x3
    365x3
    405x3

    Flat DB press

    80'sx5
    95'sx3
105'sx4(can't remember my PR with these)
    75'sx20(should be a PR)

    Curls

    4 sets(3 BB, 1 hammer)

    Tricep pushdowns

    1 set of 12

Then I played 1 game of softball to help my buddy out.

Ended up training by myself tonight in the commercial gym. Other than the fact that I can't hand myself off for crap, it went well. I was happy with the lockouts and the DB's. The 405 felt good in my hands and although the 105's were tough to setup with, the reps were all smooth and strong.

I still don't know my plans for this weekend. I guess I'll figure it out by tomorrow.

i think jumping has to do with the whole leg (hips, glutes, hams, quads), and abs just like squatting does.

i was just wondering cause I have a decent vertical (can grab rim easily and soft dunked back in the day) and with you being around the same height and weight, but your squat being allot heavier them mine thought you might be able to about dunk.

While CR squats with tremendous power; which is a function of force generated relative to speed, what separates him from the average 165lber is his tremendous torque, or nasty dirty grind, as we say at EEB. While power would translate into a higher jump, nasty dirty grimy grind doesn't. Imagine a steam roller at full throttle pushing 5mph against a huge weight - if you take away the weight, the steamroller wont launch forward with greater speed or distance, because it's using torque to push against the object. If you had a racing motorcycle at full throttle pushing against an object at 5mph then removed the object, it would launch forward much faster and further than the steam roller. A crude example, but i'm a crude thinker.

I thought that was a great example - layman's terms.

Took the weekend off and went out to Montauk(the end of Long Island...the very end) and just chilled out with some friends for my buddy's birthday. Got drunk and then drunker(yes, drunker), went fishing, slept little, somehow made it back out this morning and played softball so we could make the playoffs. Now I'm shot. Back to business tomorrow.

    Standing BB OH press(narrow/strict)

    115x3
    135x3

    BWx12(OH)
    BWx8(UH)

    1-arm DB laterals

    20x15
    25x15

    Kaz press(Smith machine)

    5 sets of 10

    Bench press(pec groove)

    135x20
    135x17
    135x13

    Treadmill- 1 mile(half on steep incline/half flat)

Felt suprisingly strong after a weekend of drinking and crappy eating. Decided on adding the OH press into today's session and skipping the incline DB's. I beat my PR by 5 lbs and last time it was done as a first movement. After that it was just a bunch of volume.

Tomorrow I will box squat w/bands and then probably pull conventional w/bands. At least that's the plan.

Had a real good night tonight. My box squats felt strong and fast. I decided to work up a few singles. 415 felt real good. Next week I plan to work up in full gear after the speed work, but I will remove the box when I put my suit on.

Then I decided to mess around yet again with my deadlift technique and I managed to pull a PR. I was doing what I refer to as Magnussons to warmup. I basically start a few feet back from the bar, run up and grab the bar, roll it in and go. 405 felt pretty good, but there was too much room for error. I decided to simplify it by setting up about 10-12" from the bar and just bending down and rolling it into me. This really seemed to help my lockout. It was an easier transition for me to throw my hips through. I used a slightly wider stance than I have been as well. My best before this in a belt was 505 and this 515 was easier. Also, I just missed 510 a little above the knees a few weeks back. I can't wait to try this form in the Fusion.

Tomorrow I will hit my abs and stuff and then Shirt bench on Thursday.

yeah i've been doing the magnussons too - i start a few feet from the bar, and then dive under it Peter C style until my fat belly jams me up - so far i've worked up to 725.

meanwhile pavel tsatsouline wrote an interesting article about rounding the upper back on cdls - it's in the issue with vlad on the cover - check it out - if you don't have it i'll copy it for you and then get sued by mike lambert for copyright infringement and dr judd will put a curse on me.

also i noticed the rolling in form is what i was using when my dl was moving - it's in the vid you took of me doing the 605 x 3 - is that what you're talking about?

Well, I know some people roll out and then roll back in. I started away from the bar, took my air while standing, then bent over grabbed it and just rolled straight in and pulled like a mofo. I spent little time at the bottom. I believe you bent down, gripped, rolled out then back in. No?

I'd have video of the 515, only TODD decided to have an extreme closeup of Bernor's face while he was sitting on the deadlift couch(which was moved off the platform to make room today). So by the time he swung the camera back to me I was already locking it out. Next time I'll take video when I try it in the Fusion. It was a much easier lockout though and I held it no problem just like Captain Bagel would have.

Captain Bagel would be proud. Glad to see nothing has changed. Give Todd a purple nurple for that.

We were very short-handed tonight and my shoulder was real iffy so I decided not to do shirt work. Shoulder held up pretty well on the stuff I did though and my strength seemed normal. Next week I will definitely get back in the shirt.

    Raw SQ/DL

    Squat(raw/no belt)

warmed up to 235x1 on box, then:

    235x1
    285x5

Partial Sumo Deadlifts off 4" blocks(Raw)

    225x3
    365x3
    455x1

    *add belt*

    525x1
    525+4 chainsx1(PR/50-55 lbs of chain)

    *Chains off*

    525x3
    545x3(PR)

    1-arm DB rows

    85x4
    105x3
    120x14

    Chins(UH)

    BWx10

Tonight went well. Second heavy raw DL I pulled this week and pulled PR's in each session. Squats felt pretty good too, so I may keep them in and just bump them up slow for a while until I'm squatting some respectable weights. Lockout is definitely starting to improve on the pulls so that is a plus.

Tomorrow I will do my ab work and some more upper back/rear delt stuff.

    nice!!!! same for on thursday.

Chris when you deadlift in gear do you wear briefs as well as a suit? up to this point i would deadlift in suit only at a meet, but i've been talking to some real strong guys who tell me to try pulling in briefs AND a suit. what do you think about this? im sure it won't hurt to try....
