    Weird day today. I was certain gyms were closed today for New Years, so I had no intention of lifting. Then someone had posted on FB about going to the gym, so I called my gym and sure enough they were open. So I start warming up my squat and I have a pain in my hip/groin and I just can't seem to loosen it up. I pulled a PR deficit deadlift yesterday, so I wasn't supposed to pull today, but I had spent half the day watching deadlift videos on YouTube and I watched this freaky kid pulling as high as 715 in a belt @181 using this weird narrow sumo-hybrid stance. I started to mess around with it and just kept working up. It didn't bother my groin and even though my back was cranked I was still able to work up heavy. I would like to mess with this stance more and figure out a way to get some speed off the floor, but the pull itself seems to stay pretty smooth to lockout. I would also like to try it with the DL bar because I used a crappy gym bar. So after all that I started back under the squat bar. I brought my stance in a touch and it felt ok. So I decided to work up and I ended up going heavier than I have all training cycle without wraps. I had a little more in me, but after all those pulls and with my groin not being 100% I decided to leave it at that. I'll see how I feel tomorrow, but the plan is just to hit 420 in wraps for 1-3 reps and to bench.

    Awesome PR Chris. I have a hard time watching some YT videos, I'm skeptical if they're actually using the weight they say or if they've thrown on rubber bumper plates. There's a guy on facebook that's gone around saying he's bench pressed 1000 pounds raw, all he does is stack on rubber weights that look like 45's. It's pretty entertaining. YT videos get me pumped up for the gym though.

    So today I joined that gym that I went to yesterday. I was able to train with my cousin today who goes there, so I had the confidence to push the squat a little. That is the most I have ever even tried to walk out and then it was the most weight that I have ever doubled. I am pretty confident I could have tripled it, but I'll do that soon enough. Then I messed with those deadlift again. They felt pretty good, but I am still going to need to work on pulling faster off the floor. My conventional is much more explosive.

    That's awesome you got to lift with him, he's a beast! I was watching his videos too, he seems to go a bit wider, but they both pull with a lot of back for a sumo stance.

    I definitely had another rep in me on the squat, but I took the easy PR and stopped. I think that deadlift either matches my best conventional without a DL bar or beats it by 5 lbs. Either way it's the biggest sumo pull I have ever done and I still have some left in me. I really want to try these with a DL bar and baby powder. I might do that soon.

    Smashed a squat PR. Bench Didnt feel too great. The low volume, high frequency feels great for my squat and pull, but I think I need some type of structure for my bench. Going to come up with a plan for the next 6 weeks leading into the meet. I want to be absolutely ready to handle 300 lbs by then.

    Hit a big Milestone today on a day I felt like total garbage. My hips, groin and back were all very sore and tight. I only worked up to my "minimum" weight on squat for a single. I had wanted to try my new deadlift stance out with the deadlift bar, so I just did it anyway and man am I glad I did.

    That last pull beat my best gym pull with any stance by 30 lbs and is 15 more lbs than my best meet pull that I hit in November of 570 conv. The lockout was slow and steady, but my grip was rock solid and I was able to hold it after I locked for the classic PR head nod that I do. This is only my 5th time working with this stance and it has all been in the last 10 days. I think if I can get my technique better and come in with a fresher back/hips I can break the 600 lb plateau! Very excited about this!

    Thanks Mark! It's definitely worth it to utilize in training. Even if you remain stronger conventional, you can bring up some weaknesses working on sumo.

    I am competing 6 weeks from now in an RPS meet. 3 weeks from now I am going to do a deadlift only Charity meet that my Buddy John Gaglione is running called I <3 Deadlifting: Deadlift for Mike Jenkins. I will use that as a last Heavy Deadlift day before the full meet. My goal is to take a shot at 600 that day. I will spend the next 3 weeks working on my technique, my speed and some other weaknesses while still squatting my ass off. Hoping to go something like 530-575-600 that day. We'll see how the next few weeks go.

    Another great training session! For the past 4 years or so I have benched with a thumbless, suicide grip. I started doing this because I had a bad pain in my wrist when I would wrap my thumb and I couldn't find a comfortable position even with a heavy wrist wrap. Benching thumbless caused no pain and I eventually broke all my PRs and felt stronger thumbless. The few times I have tried to bench with my thumb wrapped since it felt awkward and I just didn't feel as comfortable. Well tonight I just said fuck it. My bench needs serious work and I needed to make some changes. So tonight I gripped the bar with my thumb wrapped and ring finger on the rings for all sets and it felt great. I was able to get a better squeeze on the bar and I smashed my PR with some left in the tank.

    So from now until the meet, Monday will be my heavy bench day. I will bench FIRST to make it a priority. I will do heavy pause work followed by an overload(slingshot). I will absolutely have myself prepared to break 300 lbs at this meet. I will accept no less. All my lifts are stringers than ever right now and I still see more potential on all of them. I am so fired up right now to smash PRs I can't fucking wait!
