The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Not exactly. I'm looking at sometime this summer. Josh and I are discussing when he thinks I'll be ready to compete.

    Friday 3.29.13 - Week 12, Day 1
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Full body foam roll and dynamic warmup

    Bench 375 3x3
    Close grip 3 board 315 3x3
Bench, bottom end drives 275 2x5
    Standing band flyes 2x15
Tri set dbl tricep ext 25 3x12
    Band scap retractions 3x12
    Band pullaparts 4x12
    Planks 30 seconds x 3

This was a planned and very needed deload. Time to reenergize. Did my complete foam roll and warmup. This is very necessary. I can no longer skip it. Not sure when I am competing, but it is time to start getting in the right frame of mind and dial things in on all levels.

    Mental Training
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Spent half an hour on the mental aspect of training yesterday. I went back to the original book I bought on the topic. It was fun to read my notes. I do not have a head for dates so I can't tell when it was from. However, in the margins it mentioned how my goal was to bench 500 lbs raw. Well, I sure passed that goal. Now I'll be using it to hit 600 raw in my third weight class.

The focus yesterday was on breathing and energy. I often forget how important it is to practice diaphragmatic breathing. It helps on so many levels. A good lesson. Just try to be angry or anxious when practicing proper diaphragmatic breathing, it's pretty much impossible.

Regarding energy, it is important ot focus on your energy. Energy is something that is easy to change. When I am tense, I just bring my chin up, breathe well, and roll my neck and head round a few times to each side. Also, jumping while I am training can really change my energy.

What I took away mostly from yesterday's studies was, negative talk during a session can sabotage training. Sometimes I like to have fun and bust balls while training. Yes, it's good to have a fun time, but I have to remember the goal of being there. I will be more positive this week.

The mental attitude of positive re-inforcement is quite a powerful tool, more of dismissing the negatives than anything. I.e; Saying you HATE squatting, or you hate salmon etc, when you only dislike them a little - you'll end up hating them.

Wishing you the best with a 600 bench!

Thx. Yeah, really trying to focus on the positive. Last night I decided to call my Saturday night meals "reward" meals instead of cheat meals.

    Saturday 4.6.13 - Week 13 or 1a, Day 1
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Foam roll, upper and lower
    Dynamic warmup

    Paused bench 480 1x3
Special exercise and CAT bench 440 4x3 (2 min RI) *missed my last CAT rep on the last set
Close grip bench against dbl mini bands 305x3, 345x3, 380x4
    Dead bench 440 4x1
    Standing band flyes 3x15
Tri set tricep ext 45 4x8
    Band scap retractions 3x12
    Band pullaparts 4x12
    Planks 3x30 seconds

So, I have completed my first 12 weeks with Josh. That was kind of the warmup program I guess. We are now starting to get into some meet prep. Still not sure when I am competing. Josh will get an idea from the work I am doing.

Well, it doesn't feel like there is less volume, that's for certain. I made sure to get a good warmup in, then took plate jumps to the 480 for the paused triple. It felt good and I was in a great groove. I hope this continues as weight goes up. It's weird for me not handling max weights every week.

So, after benching, I did a lot more benching. Josh has me doing a special exercise. Don't ask me what it is because I won't tell you. I am paying Josh to train me. I respect his abilities. If you want his personalized programming, you can pay him also.

I did miss one rep on CAT bench. I was spent. There was also a weird exercise setup which I believe I should remedy for next week. All part of the process.

    Ask me a question

Monday 4.8.13 - Week 13, Day 3 and thoughts on training
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chest supported dbl rows 130 4x9
    Shrugs 130 3x10
Rev band bench pulldowns "strict" 3x12
1 arm dbl rows superset with Meadows rows 120 3x8
Standing one arm band low row 3x15
    Nuetral grip pullups bw+15 3x5
    Land mines 25 3x6

I keep hoping for the work to get easier, but it just keeps getting harder and harder. This is quite a conundrum. I should want the work to get harder, right? However, when I played sports, I never wanted practice to get harder. I mean I practiced as hard as I could, but I never hoped for it to get harder.

The point is with training, you have to be very self motivated. It is very rare that a powerlifter would have a coach that watches him or her on a regular basis. Nor are your training partners really that invested in what you do. It's up to the indivdual.

So, I have to embrace grueling sessions. The dbl and Meadows rows supersetted left me on my knees, with my heart pounding, gasping for air. I guess the next time I feel like that from an exercise during a session I should plaster a huge smile on my face. That's the stuff that's going to make me better.

Is there accommodating resistance in CAT? What're the main differences between that and DE work, rep scheme?

I honestly don't know the difference. I emailed Josh when I saw CAT for the first week. He just told me to push like dynamic bench. When I researched and saw an article he wrote, he discussed how the %'s were higher than Louie's recommendations for speed work.
