The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Yeah, I can see how only doing two triples with 800+ could make you feel weak. Waah.

Wiseass! That's why I love you so much. I should have said that I have been feeling really weak off the chest with my raw work. I have done over 50 reps with 225 and doing just triples yesterday was more taxing than it should have been.

Hey bro, glad the blood work came back good. I've never had any issues with mine, amazingly enough, but hate waiting to find out. Solid work. Sucks to be feeling a bit off but I know you, you'll have a killer session and pull through.

Edit: Vin, are you doing monthly seminars or are these just an every once in blue moon type deals. Also, if my wife came and just sat in, didn't train, would we be paying for two people still?

Thanks Mark. Regarding the seminars, they are just things that pop up. When a gym owner wants to hold one or there is enough solid interest in an area where can approach gym. As far as a wife hanging out, that would really be up to the gym owner. Ultimately they would have to decide because they collect the moeny and hold the seminar.

For supplements I just started taking creatine again.

    Friday 9/3/10
    ME Bench

    -Seated overhead rack lockouts 95/135x10, 185/225x5, 275/315/365x3, 405/425/455x1, 475x0
    -3 board press 315/405/495/545x3
    -Blast strap tri ext 3x15
    -Neutral grip pullups 5x5
    -H rolls 20 3x15

Decent workout. However, I have now missed a ME rep twice in the last month. That's not acceptable. I will come back to get a 635 rev band bench and a 475 overhead rack lockout in the next month. That being said, I should have gotten them the first time around. I am fogetting about the little things like icing, getting to bed on time, and foam rolling. If I want to hit numbers I have never hit before I have to be willing to put in all the work, just not the sessions in the gym. I have also been a little loose with the diet. I am holding steady at 275, but I notice I go out and get food a little more than I should. I'll get that back down to once a week. I only have around 8 weeks until my meet, it's time to turn it up! SFW!

    Conditioning/Recovery

-20 minute walk with 20lb ankle weights on each ankle
    -Foam roll and stretch
    -Contrast shower

Went to a party, It was such a nice day that I was glad to spend a few more hours outside. It was at my sister in law's neighbor's house. I guess she has bragged to them about my lifting. When I got there I was approached by quite a few people who had watched my youtube lifting vids on their phones. I felt like a celebrity, it was fun.

Now that's funny. I'll have to do one of those gratuitous crotch shots where I'm getting out of my car in a skirt without underwear.

    Sunday 9-5-10
    Squat

    -Band gm's 3x15
    -Mcgill situps 3x15
    -SSB box squats 300/340/395x5
    -Dbl shrugs 25x100
    -Blast strap curls 5x10

Everything felt good squatting today, so I went with my 5/3/1 percentages instead of deload numbers. However, I just did the prescribed reps. Maybe next week I'll push the last set for some extra reps. I also want to throw in an assistance leg movement like TKE's on this day.

Squats look good bro, and I think just you in a skirt would suffice, minus the crotch shot.

    Monday 9-6-10
    DE Bench

    -Speed bench 225 4x3, 235/245/265/275x3
    -JM Press 135 3x10
    -One arm pushdowns 20 5x15
    -Standing vbar pulldowns 90 5x15
    -Contra-lateral shoulder raises 25 3x10

-Indian club swings each arm x50

Wow, another uninspired workout. I can't seem to pull it together for DE training. Plus I am still having pain in my left shoulder. Every set of bench hurt and so did the JM's. That's why I shut them down. Then by the time I get to back work I just don't care. So I think I am going to change this to an assitance day. I'm going to start with back work first. I have been going too easy on lat work. Then I'll do either some light band speed bench, but more likely physioball dumbell presses, or maybe even inclines. Then I'll hit tri's. I'm going to make this a low intensity tri day with light weight and high reps. I'll hit my high intensity day on ME day.

Vincent, we are going to start incorporating benching in our shirts against bands and chains etc.

When you do this, how do you determine the bar weight? Two of us have benched 600 in competition and a third guy has benched 650 or so. I was thinking we'd start at about 455 bar weight and then add chains.

    Any thoughts, guidelines, or observations?

When we use chains we usually work up to 135 plus all the chains we are going to use (which is usually 5 per side) and then increase the bar weight from there. With bands it's pretty much the same, but we don't all use the same band. Anyone who is in the shirt will then do their shirt work with the same band tension or chain weight (if that is the plan for the day).

Vincent may be able to tell you why we do it this way, but this is generally what we do. When we do bands I usually just bench straight weight with the girls because I am a giant vagina when it comes to bands.

Well put Drew, thanks for fielding that one. Yeah, we just throw our chains and bands on from the beginning. I don't know or care what band tension or chain weight equals. I qualify the lift as 600+the number of chains or the name/color of the band. The use of bands and chains are just a way of stimulating the muscle in a different way.

    Tuesday 9/7/10
    Conditioning/Recovery

    -Treadmill, hiit 25 minutes
    -10 minutes foam rolling

    Wednesday 9/8/10
    Deadlift

    -Standing band ab pulldowns 4x10
    -Physioball reverse hyper w/band 4x10
-Trap bar dl uppe handles 295/340/395x5
    -Calf raises 3x15
-Tricep bar hammer curl 60 5x10

    Thursday 9/9/10
    Conditioning/recovery

    -Treadmill, hiit 25 minutes
    -10 minutes foam rolling

Went to pt for my back and it appears much of my problem is tightness in my hip on the right side. Now that we know what it is, hopefully we can do something about it.

    Friday 9/10/10
    Max Effort Bench

-Floor press, worked up to 455 2x3
-Rolling dumbell tri ext 45 5x15
-Hammer strength row 6 plates 5x15
    -Rear delt machine 50 3x15

So we trained at Gold's Gym in New Haven, CT. The place is relatively hard core. The owners are great. That being said, I was out of my element. I like training in a small controlled facility. This was more like working out in a gym. Fortunately I was treating this as kind of a deload. I am not taking a legitimate deload this cycle, but I did need to take things down a bit for a week. So, I only did my supplemental exercise, no Max Effort. The floor press was ok, but my left shoulder pain persists.

    Saturday 9/11/10
    Conditioning/recovery

    -Treadmill, hiit 25 minutes
    -10 minutes foam rolling
    -Farmer's, tire, and prowler medley

I just wanted to do a little extra work today. The medley was sadistic and fun. It felt great to go all out of something. I was breathing like a runaway train when I finished. I'm going to try and do this twice a week. I just have to leave out the tire, it really screwed up my back.

God Bless those who lost loved ones from the 9/11 tragedy. Never forget!

    Sunday 9/12/10
    Squat and my Anniversary

    -Treadmill, 5 minutes
    -SSB good mornings 4x10
Superset w/Standing band ab pulldowns 4x10
    -SSB box squats 315/365/415x3
    -Band tke's 3x15
    -Dbll shruges 75 3x15
    Superset w/Dbll conc curls 25 3x10

I am blessed to be celebrating my 6th wedding anniversary with the hottest enabler in the world. I love my wife Jessica like crazy. I'm a lucky guy and she's even a luckier girl. Even though this is our 6th annversary we have been together for over 19 years now. I was 21 when we met and she was only 17 (we waited to date until she was 18).

Happy opening day of football to all!

    Conditioning/Recovery

    -PT for back
    -Treadmill, 25 min hiit
    -Stretching

PT helped get the back up and running a bit. He's trying to find a way to loosen up my right hip. Through trial an error he thinks he's on the right track now, it's just going to take a while. I have been protecting the right side of my back for over a decade now. It's cause some serious imbalance. He told me to just stick with deload numbers for now on the squat and deadlift. I love a PT that allows you to squat and deadlift even if it's only with deload numbers.

    Assistance

    -Close grip bench 315x20
    -Pushdowns 50 5x15
    -Tbar rows 45/90/135/180/225/180/135/90/45x10
    -Face pulls 3x15

I had a lot of good things happen during this session. First, I put together a solid warm up before training. This has always been a haphazard thing for me. Well, after my training partner Drew called me out, I figured I should work something out. Then I saw an article on Elite that gave me some ideas. I went through the warmup below and was left loose, sweating, and breathing heavily. In other words, it was perfect. So when I say warm up, you should all know what I mean. Here's the routine:

    10 jumping jacks
    10 push ups
    10 crossover jacks
    10 bodyweight squats
    10 blast strap pullups
    10 wrist circles
    10 blast strap scarecrows
    10 lunges
    10 arm circles
    10 blast strap tri ext
    x2

Next, I did a 315 close grip x 20 for Jesse Marunde. It's his birthday and his mom was asking people to remember him with a 20 repper. Man, I'm not used to 20 reps. They got heavy after a little bit. Anyway, mission accomplished.

My body held up well and I got some quick quality work in. My shoulder feels ok and the back held up just fine. I am happy for that.

Most importantly, I was motivated. I am looking forward to competing in around 6 weeks. I want to hit some heavy weight. Part of the motivation came from music. I have had a really difficult time with music since my brother's passing. I am an emotional guy and music makes me very emotional to begin with. I stayed away from music because I would often find myself reduced to tears during a training session. I held it together today. If all goes as planned I'll honor Sammy with a pr in October.

mr dizenzo, just wanted to start off saying i'm coming to your seminar october 2nd and i am really looking forward to learning from you and all the other people who will be there.

also, just wanted to say i completely understand what you mean about nearly breaking down during training, as one of my best friends and long time training partners passed away recently, and lifting without thinking about it has been difficult lately. just wondering what helped you get through it?
