The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Its no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

My SPF Meet Write Up w/video

    Video

I drove down to TN with Tee Tee and Rhodes for the SPF Ironman. It was a lovely 13 hour trip. I have been miserable and sore for the past couple of weeks and the drive did not help. I have been having plenty of personal stuff going on, but a serious competitor should be able to put that crap out of his mind. To top it off I have bloated up a good 15 lbs in the past few weeks so I am quite self loathing.

On Saturday warmups went well enough. I smoked a 500 opener and my 560 went pretty much the same. For the third I took 600. I wanted a 600 raw in my second weight class. It came off my chest great. I drifted it to try and finish, but I just ended up pushing it into the rack. Everyone was like "You had it, you just misgrooved it." I could easily take that excuse and run with it, but that was not the case. The weight was about 5 more lbs than I was capable of lifting that day. However, I would not have been anymore satisfied with a 595 bench than the 560 I left with.

I want to congratulate my training partner Tee Tee McCray for hitting a nice 840 bench. This is his first meet after having his tricep reattached. Well done big guy. You got to add another best lifter award to your resume. I also need to thank Rhodes for handling us. He did a great job. All my training partners are great and thanks to Dave for his programming help.

A couple of parting thoughts. The meet was very well run. I have been to just about every pro type event there is and the judging at the SPF is on par with the rest of the multiply feds. I was glad to meet so many of the guys who from the forum. It was great talking to you all. Lones from here at WBB had a great day. Congrats to Chad "Tom Selleck" Wesley Smith for his great meet. He's a crazy strong lifter and a really cool guy. It was great to see the ElteFTS guys that were there. I got to hang out with Josh McMillan again which was fun. He's the biggest 270 lb man I have ever seen (and he might even weigh a little less than that). Big Rob's raw 1000lb raw squat was such an electric feat at the meet. Everyone there agreed it was a great lift. AJ and Hoff were amazing. They are also really cool guys. Congrats on the all time world records guys. Got to bs with Louie a little and that's always fun. The Godfather even hugged me on my way out. Sometimes a thing like that is even more important than numbers. I know some people have problems with others in this sport, but I have a philosophy of treating others like they treat me. Everyone there treated me really well and for that I am humbled and grateful.

So I did not compete at the level I wanted. That is my fault alone. I need to take a look at things and really learn from this. I need to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together to accomplish the goals I set out for myself. A goal without a plan is little more than a wish.

You learn more from the weight you missed than the one you made. Great write up. And anyone that puts up 560 raw is still freakishly strong.

Great job brother, 560 is still a hell of a bench. Time to put the shirt back on and lift some real weights. Wish I could have been there but glad I didn't sit in a car with you guys for 26 hours.

Vin, sorry you didn't get the number you wanted brother. I know that stuff is frustrating. However you will indeed live to try it another day.

    Thx Trav

    Wed 3/9/11
    Back/Biceps

    -Inverted row 5x5
-Single arm dumell rows 50 3x10
-Fat bar pulldowns to belly 90 3x10
-Single arm blast strap curls 3x10

Just something quick and easy. I kept the rest to 1 minute between all sets.

I started working with Kiefer a little while ago. I was doing well and then switched things up to bloat up for the SFP meet. I have to tell you, when eating carbs all day I feel like I am being poisoned. I'm tired and lethargic. When I don't eat carbs during the day I feel much better. So I am getting back to it. I already feel a little better. I just have to make sure to eat like wild in the evening or I'll start losing quickly. I'm going to keep my weight up for a little while longer. Then it's back down to the 270 range for the Europa in July.

Vinman, sorry about the miss at 6 bro. On the upside, it really just looked like a simple mistake you made to miss it! The weights looked incredibly easy in your hands and the speed was phenomenal. Whatcha got planned next? I'm still on track to come up and compete there this summer man. Really looking forward to it actually.

Yeah, I want to get back in the shirt for that meet this summer. It would be great to get on the platform and bench with you and Tee Tee. The Europa in CT is a great venue. I hope lots of lifters come out. It's one where you could have your family and friends come and really be proud of what you do.

I have pushed all my carbs back to the evening and feel much better already. I'm just trying to get back to feeling decent after the meet. I must continue to do the little things because they sure add up.

    Fri 3/11/11

    -Bench, worked up 405 4x1
    -Fat bar pushdowns 50 3x20
    -Face pulls 50 3x20

Just got some work in. Also, I changed some form things up. Moved my grip in about one finger and gripped the bar stright instead of turning my hands. Plus I setup further under the bar. Without the shirt I don't need to worry about drifing when I'm benching raw, at least I am not supposed to. Plus I don't feel the stress of getting the weight out when I'm closer.

    Sunday 3/13/11

    -Standing ab pulldowns w/band 3x15
    -Standing gm's w/band 3x10
    -Sumo dl dbl overhand 135/185/225/275x5
    -SSB squats 155/205/245/295/335x5

Put the dl first. I'm going go with sumo for a little while instead of the trap bar. I'll have to do this if I ever want to hit a full meet again one day. That and I'll have to get under a regular squat bar once in a while. For the dl I need to build my grip strength. With my weight I can't really grab with a hook, but I'll get back to that soon enough. Just sticking with deload weights for now. My back is a little tight and I have some plans so just getting a little work in.

I can't hook grip at all. My hands are too small which ends up putting all the pressure on my thumbs

Double overhand shrugs really helped my grip

Thanks for the advice Trav. I don't shrug really, my traps grow too well as it is. When I'm back around 270 my hook works pretty well. I'll be back there for this summer.

-Dbl bench on plyo ball 50 3x20
-Seated dbl shoulder press 40 3x20
-Rolling dbl tri ext 30 3x20

Kept rest at one minute between sets (using a timer). I was done in around 15 minutes. Everything was light and easy as it should have been. Just pumped some blood into the muscles. Mission accomplished.

-Single arm dumbell rows 50 3x10
-Fat bar pulldowns to belly 90 3x10
-Single arm blast strap curls 3x10

    Friday
    -Bench, worked up 460 1x1
    -Spud strap pushdowns 50 3x20
-Spud strap ace pulls 50 3x20

My training partner Tee Tee called while I was training. We chatted for about half an hour about Saturday's UFC fights. Jon Jones is just incredible. I am already hoping for a fight between him and Anderson Silva. After the call I was a little too cold to hit up squats. I was pretty heart broken--Not!
