    Running shoes for variable speeds (not long distance)?

    I play tennis, and I'm a firm believer that variable speed running (includes but doesn't have to be HIIT) is more effective. Tennis is all about quick bursts of speed spread out over a long period of time chaotically. Hence, distance running, which is more rhythmic, isn't as effective.

    I'm looking for a pair of running shoes that are better suited to this type of running.

    What are your recommendations?

    I plan on running in an indoor track, if that helps.

    unless you're competing in sprint, there should be no difference in a distance shoe to a variable speed shoe. Ultimately what you're looking for is a shoe that will make up for your biomechanical instabilities and faults. If you overpronate the stress on your knees will be the same regardless of what you run. Go to a running shop (I recommend Fleet Feet) and explain your situation. They'll be able to help you best. Unless we looked at your gait and arches we really can't help you on line.

    I saw some people praise Nike Free for sprinting. Yet still, others hate them. I'm going to try them on next time I get a chance to see how they feel.

    I just use my chepo Easton hightop baseball cleats w/gel inserts ($25 total)and an unused soccer/football/baseball field. Running on grass or sand takes alot of the shock trauma out of short burst running.

    do you sprint? Are you a competitive runner? The idea behind Nike sprint is that they feel as if you're wearing nothing. Unless your feet are neutral and you're sprinting I see no advantage to these shoes. It's why most folks hate them. You need a shoe that's right for you and from what I know about you, I don't think this is the shoe.

    Does places like fleet feet know what they are doing? I mean if i went there wondering what the best shoe is for me, not knowing my weaknesses/faults, could they pinpoint them and suggest the best shoe for me?

    Squat - 305lbs - 1/23/06 ----- 335
    Deadlift - 415lbs - 2/4/06 ---- 435
    Bench - 90s*7 ----------------- 100s*5
    Weight - 208 ------------------ 190

    Forget about specific brands. Go to a store staffed by runners, and have them analyze your gait, and then select the shoe that works best for you. It should be comfy, and supportive. Don't settle for anything less, or anything that has to "break in".

    Yes, folks at Fleet Feet do know what they're doing. The fleet feet I'd go to in San Antonio, Houston, and Austin were staffed by college interns who ran, had a background in exercise physiology and were runners. This was especially true for the one in Austin although there was always someone who knew what they were doing at the other stores. Their advice was always right on. I got to know the owner at the San Antonio store so well he'd test new shoes on me. It was great...the reps would say "this is great for heavier runners who overpronate" he'd say, "okay, I'm gonna test them on my guy...if he likes them, I'll place an order. Next thing you know I have a pair of $150 diadoras on my feet that I didn't even have to pay for. How cool is that? Anyhow, mypoint is you can trust the folks at Fleet feet.

    The closest Fleet Feet in your area is in Vermont. There are none in Maine. I'm sure there's a running store in Maine though. I find it hard to imagine otherwise. Best of luck.
