The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Pretty good stuff other'n bench pressing. Musta just had a freak week last week or a sh**ty one this week for benching. Added 5 lbs to inclines DB pressing and OH tricep extensions which is cool; all accessory movements are movin' on up. Managed another 5x10 of chins, too.

Nice pressing dude..don't discount you efforts..235x5 is not a bad place to be at all considering everything. Looks like a great upper body session to me.

Don't sweat it. There's so many variables that go into great training sessions. You know what your goal was? 1 rep. Until you miss that number, then be disappointed, but until then, just do what you can. I know it's easy to say, and I'd probably be pissed off too, but in the big picture, it's not a big deal. Your overall strength clearly isn't going backwards so take it as a below average pressing session. Great increases with everything else, though.

Had to cut this one short, my lower back was so chock full of lactid acid it was seeping out of my f***ing skin pores. Squats felt alright; not really improving much on my squat form. I hit up the Olympic coach and he helped me out a bit with form - I might start training more with the Olympic folks when it comes to squat day, they know what they are doing. Weight might have to get bumped down but when he had me squatting light today it felt pretty solid. In other news I saw the HOTTEST f***ing girl I have ever seen step inside a weight room today. Perfect body, I was like holy sh**. Even better, she was cleanin' & jerkin'! Adds an automatic 100% to the hotness factor. 8===D

Awesome session. I could only pull 285 about 8 weeks ago, and now i'm doing 300x11 Added 10 lbs to my dead from last week, too. Think I have it in about the right area now, will add 10 lbs after the deload next week and see where i'm sittin. Had to miss Military day session so I just put them both in today's session and called it good. Gonna enjoy a nice deload next week and look forward to Cycle 3.

You certainly have everything dialled in jedley!!

300x11 on the DLs nice. Your back is certainly getting strongerer again!!

I know exactly what you mean about the elbow pain. I have had it so bad that it made me feel ill. My wife thought I was imagining it but then my mother law backed me up and said she had experienced the same thing (not from benching though, lol). get some glucosamine and fish oil and then apply ice and heat every day.

God damn dude! I've been following along, don't worry. Just haven't posted lately. I am most impressed with your milies and squats. Things are just coming along really quickly for you right now. Stay healthy and keep it rolling, bro! I had a question for you on bench. When you set your grip, what part of your hand do you drive with? I just recently started driving with the heel of my hand, the meaty part closest to my thumb and it made a world of difference with how the force was transferred. Never thought about it before, that's why I'm asking. I'm excited to see where you deadlift goes in the next year. Looking awesome broseph! Very proud of you.

Nice progress man....keep at it, and that will only continue to go up. I'm on cycle 13 now, I'd like to see someone else stick with this program for several years with me.

Those high rep final sets are definitely killers, and I know that lactic acid feeling all too well. I've grown to actually love that feeling!

Thanks for all the words fellas. Sorry it's been so long since i've been in everyones journals and sh**, i've been hella busy with school. Getting last tests in before finals and tons of projects and sh**.

    Thanks for the words john(s)!

Flynn - Fish oil is a good idea, I will have to pick some of that up sometime. Thanks for the advice man.

Keph - To answer your best question (try to at least), I think I drive with the same part. I've never really payed attention much to where I put my hand I guess. I try to do like Dave Tate and Wendler says and keep my wrist and hand as straight as I can. As I think of it more, the meaty part of the bottom area in the thumb sounds about accurate. Thanks for the words dude.

Bri - Thanks for the support, man. Yeah I love that lactic acid feeling too usually. Sometimes it's pretty damn unconfortable though too!

    BW : 197 woot.

Pretty solid session. Was content with 215x12 - obviously wanted more but what can you do I guess. Back is obviously having trouble keeping up w/ the weight gain, but it's fine with me... I can still see my abs after about a +20 lb BW gain over a few months.

    Cycle 3 Week 1 555 Deadlift 345 (+30)

Due to some scheduling with the gym, I had to switch this week around a bit. Closed tomorrow and Friday and I didn't lift Monday cause I'm a moron. Got bench and deads in this week though which is what I'm focused on more.

    Deadlift
    135x5
    135x5
    225x5
    260x5
295x10 ... Not a PR or increase. Not impressed.

    110x10
    110x10
    110x10
    110x10
    110x10

    Decline Abs
    BW+25x25
    BW+25x25
    BW+25x25
    BW+25x25

Pretty disappointed with today's performance... Did 300x11 two weeks ago, and only managed 295x10 today. Not a huge loss or anything, but there's no excuse or reason why I should be doing any less weight or reps. Oh well. Either way, I added +30 lbs from the last week of last cycle's max, so it's sitting at 345 for the working max right now. I hit 10 reps on my 5 rep day, so I shouldn't be displeased, but I still am. They took the f***ing mirror out from in front of the deadlift platform too which kinda threw me off. I'm used to using it to help maintain form. Whatever though. Hope you all have a solid Thanksgiving - I'll be working.

There's so many factors why you can have ****ty training sessions, a lot more than you can think of. Don't sweat it. I know it's easier said than done, but you've been progressing so well for so long, you're bound to come across a session that isn't what you expect. Your bench and squatting are REALLY increasing nicely. Great to see.

Great workout. Squats felt fantastic, really. The Olympic instructor that I went to helped I think... When he told me to keep my hips forward and strand more straight up it helped keep my lowback from bending as much as it used to, and my knees are getting better too. Keeping my elbows under the bar as much as I can helps a lot too, thanks Keithy. Skipped quad and lowback iso as they were both already fried - and yesterday I had to push my 5,000 lb truck 30 yards on neutral pavement cause the battery died midway through the parking lot - NOT FUN!

In other news, I am FINALLY dropping down to part time work (~16 hours a week, on weekends) for my job instead of full time 40 hours a week. This is gonna give me so much more time to focus on school, lifting and everything else. I can't wait to start doing this. I'll have enough money banked and make enough to live for a long time as long as I dont buy anything stupid like a $1000 TV which is something I never do. Also I think I'm going to join the Tae Kwon Do classes at the gym. I used to be in it when I was little but dropped out when my dad started a new job and had to quit too. Our instructor is worldwide accredited, being the first non-asian in the world to ever achieve 8th Dan black belt. He's been doing Tae Kwon Do for 41 years, and has produced over 800 black belt students. Really looking forward to sitting in on some classes and getting to know him - I think it will be a good decision for me.

I really feel like a jackwipe for not getting into anyones journals as of late. Really don't mean to be an arse about it guys. Finals week is coming so i've been studying, and had to write two 8 page papers in the past week along with take a test. Not to mention I started playing World of Warcraft again for some dumb f***ing reason - my friends made me and now i'm hooked again after a successful 1 year sobriety from the game. I'll get to your journals as soon as I can dudes. WoW seriously isn't the reason I have no time to though, lol. Once I get part time i'll have all the time in the world to be awesome, haha. Hope everyone is doing fantastic!!!

Yup, your squatting looks great and your strength keeps rising. That's cool you got to see an olympic instructor, I'm glad that helped. Great to hear you're dropping your hours down. More time for everything, even Wow, LOL. When I stopped playing Diablo 2 I put it away somewhere so I would never play again, now I don't even know where it is, haha. Cool about the tae kwon do classes. I'm not a huge believer in that martial art but it seems like you're getting the best instruction for it which is great. Don't worry about not posting in other people's journals because of school, you have your priorities straight. But don't let WoW take over your life again, haha.

That's a bad deal about D2 bro, you needa reinstall that. Someone managed to get it on the computer at work and I play it whenever no one's around... lol. Yeah I used to be in Tae Kwon Do and I enjoyed it, but I was too little to "do it myself" without my dad there. The instructor really sounds phenominal, so I seeing it as a missed opportunity if I don't at least go in and give it a shot.

I seriously am considering it's because they removed the mirror... lol. Sorry about the vids fellas - I can't figure out how to put them on my PC anymore. I used to be able to hook my USB up to my phone and it would connect but it's not detecting it anymore for one reason or another. Cheers!

Great work, bud. I noticed you stopped skull crushers because of your elbow, is it one or both? That's the worst exercise that gives my elbows pain. Describe your pain to me, because if it's the same as mine, I can give you a recommendation for treatment as I'm in the process of getting mine treated. I commented in your Youtube video but I don't know if you respond to those comments, but that was me, "jwkm55". Why don't you face away from the wall when you pull? That would piss the hell out of me to be up close to a wall like that. And don't stress about not making progress every single session, you're right, everyone gets to that point and that's where you have to look at minor changes with your training to break plateaus. You're doing great though, because you're not going backwards. Good to see you're not pulling for 20 reps, haha.

Keef - Thanks for the words brother. I'm honored I get to be one of the journals you still want to stop by in and give good advice and responses. It is my left elbow for now - back in the day it used to be both of them. The best description I can give is just super sharp pain when i'm extending / locking out. If you want a good idea of where it hurts the most, stick your arm out and do a hard triceps flex. I can can my right triceps rock hard, but my left arm won't even fully extend without having to stop for the pain and my tri's are still a bit mushy. But it hurts whenever they are being used sometimes. It's like the "bone" or "vertebrae" pain I was describing in my back, but not as serious - still painful though. If that matches anything you got lemme know what you have. I used to take Naproxen but ran out of it, it helped and I might get on that again. Also taking glucosamine. I guess I could try facing away from the wall, that might make a difference too. Guess I was just used to the mirror being there so I stuck with it. Thanks for the words dude.

Great workout. Bench sucked, and I really have come to the conclusion that i'm almost 100% sure free benching vs. cage benching is better for me. I don't know if it's the bench i'm using, the bar, the cage or what it is but it must be making a difference. Weird.

I'll echo keith here..really glad to not see 15+ reps on DLs
Looks like the bench is climbing nicely as well...seems like you've always had nice pressing strength.
