Hope everyone had a nice holiday season! Having a great time here with my buddy - just probably getting two sessions in this week with the 4 major lifts.

    Cycle 4 Week 2 333 Bench / Squat

    Bench
    185x3
    215x3
    240x7 ... +3 reps. Get some!!

    Chins
    BW 10
    BW 10
    BW 10
    BW 10
    BW 10

    Squat
    215x3
    240x3
    270x10 ... vs. 265x11

    Hanging Leg Raise
    BW 10
    BW 10
    BW 10

    BW : 200 even.

    Video

Done. Strong stuff today. Glad to see such a big move in the bench reps... 240x7 has to be close to my all time, maybe 1-2 reps away. Squats were great too, felt solid and strong throughout. 270x10 is close to an all time PR too if I recall. Calc puts my 1RM at about 360 with that! Cheers mates!

Holy ***** man....you KILLED it in that session with the crazy high reps on BOTH squats and bench....where the hell do you get the energy for that?

There's no way I'm catching you on bench right now, because I can barely do 240 x 1....but I'm gonna get you on those squats. I think last session I did 275 x 5 (that was my final set this cycle on the 555 day)....I'm gonna beat that 270 x 1!!! IT'S ON!!!!

Good job man...I love motivational stuff!

Wow dude, you're KILLING it lately. In every single lift! I wish you were doing Westside because I'll tell ya, you could smash your all-time PRs right now in every lift except bench, that's questionable but possible. Even still, it wouldn't take long with a cycle of ME lifts to hit your weak points then you could smash it! I enjoy watching you progress!

Bri - thanks for the words dude I dunno where the energy came from... probably cause I had just been sitting around for 5 days and needed to release some.

Coke, Borracho - Thanks for the words fellas

Keef - We talked, but I probably gonna take your suggestion and hit up the 5-3-1 ME days starting this upcoming cycle.

Highly recommend BJJ over TKD. Much better martial art for overall self defense and practicality.

I know Keith but we already discussed this. I talked to a dude who used to go to the BJJ place yesterday, and he said the majority of the people are "I'm a badass I want to fight everyone" types. I'll still wait to hear back from him if training is available more'n 2 days a week and go from there. If not, it's TKD.

    It's good d00dz.

    Cycle 4 Wweek 3 5-3-1 Squat

    Squat
    45x10
    135x6
    135x6
    185x3
    225x5
    255x3
    285x7 ... compare to 270x10

    Lying Straight Leg Raise
    BW 12
    BW 12
    BW 12
    BW 12
    BW 12

    Lowback Extensions
    BW 12
    BW 12
    BW 12
BW 12 ... had to stop here, so much pump I could barely move.

    Leg Press
    290x10
    290x10
    290x10
    290x10
    290x10
    ... + 10-15 lb I believe.

Great workout here today. The reps of 285 were questionable when it came to depth, I didn't manage to grab a video either. They felt great and pretty low, but I was at the point where it would hit the catch bars when I got about as deep as I could get, so if it wasn't paralell it was at least damn close to normal. Pretty happy with that number of reps with 285, that might be close to an all-time PR. Considering I have been slacking the past three weeks, I didn't expect more than 4-5 reps anyways.

Is the 225x3 a typo? Your squat is really getting up there. I wonder what you're good for if you attempted a 1 RM.

Hey Jed. Good work lately, I'm glad to see you sticking with it. I bet if you can do 285 x 7 you could set yourself a new PR. Heck my PR is/was 335 and you've been at this way more consistently than me the last few years.

Yeah it was Keith, nice catch. I'm thinking I'm good for at least 335 right now, which would be +15 all-time. I'll check next round of 5-3-1. Kill, I'm glad to see you back mate! You plan on sticking around for a while? I haven't been as consistent as you might think. I was AWOL for a good 3-4 months this summer due to back issues, and this is about the start of my fourth month getting seriously back into it.

Excellent work man. Sometimes a nice break really helps for you to come back and kill it. It's helps with both recovery and motivation.

And I don't mean to sound one-sided or anything....but BJJ or TKD???? Dude, there's no comparison. Nothing against TKD, but it's just not very practical for actual real life situations. BJJ absolutely is! Plus, the fact that every single class involves sparring (which is just like real life) really helps you put what you learn in class to use.

There are other great martial arts and fighting styles out there too. Boxing is great. Muai Thai, Judo, wrestling, etc... are all good ones too. I happen to really like BJJ because I've been training it for over a year now, and reading so much about it. But the other ones I mentioned are great too.

But if you chose TKD over BJJ, it will hurt my feelings....

Just playing...do what ya gotta do brotha! (but seriously go with BJJ)

Bri - I know and I agree with you 100%. That's why I sent you a PM asking about it. But my current situation is not really looking too bright right now. The only gym around here that has BJJ offers it only twice a week for one hour sessions for $55 a month. That is unacceptable for me. I've also heard some nasty things about that gym too, so I am forced to stick with my current gym and I am happy to do just that. Now I have to choose in-between either boxing or TKD. I am looking for two main things : heavy cardio workout and practical use. I know how to punch and kick, not like a pro however, and that's about where my martial art abilities end. I know boxing would be great for both of those, but our instructor for TKD is also the ONLY non-Korean in the world to recieve "Grand Master" 8th degree black belt credentials. I am currently torn right now. My buddy just started up boxing and he's enjoying it so far. I would like to hear more from you and anyone else about this!

I'd absolutely go with boxing then. Boxing isn't the best for self-defense...at least not compared to having a mix of BJJ and some sort of striking. But compared to TKD, boxing is definitely much better. It's:

1.) More practical for real life situations. Fights start standing up, and then usually go to the ground. I WOULD NOT want to go toe to toe with a great boxer. My MMA teacher, who is a pro MMA fighter DESTROYS ME when we spar in boxing (he kills me on the ground too). Also, in boxing you're constantly sparring and training against an actual opponent that is FIGHTING BACK. That's the key right there. The only way to learn how to fight is to go against an opponent that is trying to hurt you too. A great boxer is not to be f***ed with! I took TKD when I was younger, and the "sparring" was ridiculous. It was like, "Okay opponent does this, and you do that.....". It wasn't LIVE FIGHTING....ever. It may look cool, but it really ain't gonna do ***** against a well-trained boxer.

2.) The cardio in boxing is RIDICULOUS!!! Heavy bag work, jump rope, circuits, focus mitt work, sparring (especially sparring!), etc...it's the most intense cardio I have ever done!!! This is how I lost 40 lbs. in just a couple months from taking the MMA classes 2 - 3 times a week. In TKD, at least when I trained it, we did some jumping jacks, pushups, and situps, then we focused on our "forms" (these crack me up, I can just see someone trying to do a "form" against someone trying to kick his ass, haha).

A couple years of boxing under your belt, and you'll be deadly. The only way you will become deadly with TKD is if you become a 9th degree black belt, and even then you probably won't stand a chance against a solid boxer!

No offense to those that are into TKD, that's just my opinion.

For what it's worth I generally think of TKD as being a children's intro to martial arts. If I had my choice I would do Muay Thai or Krav Maga. Of your choices jed I would definitely do boxing/kickboxing.

Boxing, FTW! Without a doubt, boxing is FAR more applicable and effective over TKD.

Bri - that kind of raw information is exactly what I like to hear, man. You're seriously the first person I know other than my dad who has any experience in martial arts. My dad was/is a second degree black belt in TKD. Thanks for that info dude, it really helped out. Agreed that BJJ. Krav Maga and other stuff would be awesome but I have no choice, just TKD or boxing for now.

Kill - Thanks for your opinion man. Krav Maga I discovered a few months ago and looks completely like the best choice. Unfortunately the closest place to me that teaches it is in Omaha, 3 hours from where I live.

Keith - Cool, cool. Thanks for the thoughts.

    Cycle 4 Week 3 5-3-1 Military

    Military Press
    45x10
    45x10
    120x5
    135x3
150x3 ... This was embarassing, lol.

    DB Flyes
    45x12
    45x12
    45x12
    45x12
    45x12
    ... +2 reps

    Seated CG Cable Row
    160x10
    170x10
    180x10
    180x10
    180x10
... I think that might be a PR, but I can't find the last time I did cable rows. 180 seemed pretty friggin' heavy.

    DB OH Tricep Extensions
    75x12
    75x12
    75x12
    75x12
    75x12
    ... +2 reps.

Well, other than Military Press, it was a pretty solid day. Was rushed for time and got it done as quick as I could, so not as much rest in between sets as I normally like but whatever. Dunno what went on with the mili's, but i'm not really worried about it. It's not a lift that I take as serious as the other three. Will try to get Deadlift in tomorrow morning.

I'm interested in what your dads opinion is on TKD considering he is a black belt. I never made it that far so I don't know how practical it is taking it all the way to the top.
