The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

My bad bro, I forgot you were still reading at a 5th grade level.

But seriously, there's a lot of stuff I didn't know about running. Technique too, there are ways to negate the shin splints.

Yeah I agree man. Definitely, and running form is the most important. Unfortunately it's hard as fuck to perfect and I don't have a coach behind me every step telling me what to fix. Shoes are huge though and since I spent some good money on a pair I've noticed I can run a lot more without splints starting to come on.

Who the hell is redfury? And hell yes. HAVE to. Italicized!! Thanks for coming back Keph... I'm getting shit rebooted. More of a newer approach for me. Focusing on cardio these days and I'm starting to do some BW stuff to get back into it. Considering CrossFit. My elbow and lowback are a point of concern so my heavy days are numbered and maybe not even a thought. What can ya do though.

BW movements are the best dude. Pullups are fuckin King of back and arms. Don't care what anyone says. You could also pickup some Jump Stretch bands from Elite FTS and use those for extra work on the pushups. Just wrap them around your back and go to work; pretty easy to setup and adds a lot of work for the chest. Handstand pushups used to be an old favorite for my shoulders. Also, for legs, full box jumps dude. Get an 16-20" box and what you do is go into a full squat (no weight here - just air-squats). Then jump to the box and when you land, land with both feet completely on the box (not just your toes) and sink into another full squat. Then spring back off and when you land, sink into another full squat. Hit about 4-5 sets of 10-15 reps and your fucking legs will be completely dead...trust me. I still love jumpin rope too.

Refresh my memory on the lower back and elbow issues? Honestly, I don't really care about heavy or huge strength anymore. I have been all over the place this year with routines. These days, I just wanna look good, stay strong(enough) and not get injured.

So glad to have you back man. With you three feeding me info I will be pretty well off... Just that post right there added tons of good ideas for me. I'm really aiming to get a lot of my old strength back through BW movements but not add any extra stress through heavy weights. Like you I basically want to look good and I actually do want to be in some pretty good cardio shape for the coming years.

Elbow I got surgery on a few months ago, there were loose bodies and I thought it was going to be the fix for the annoying piercing pain that had been plaguing me for 6 years. It ended up not helping (helping in the long run) the issue so that's that. Elbow is fucked for heavy pushing movements. Even for BW or no weight movements (dips or punching) I can feel the serious pain when I get to attempted hyperextension.

Lowback has just had some issues in the past and I can still feel it resurface when I do some (sometimes random) movements. Just recently I had a cornstalk (lol, Iowans) in a field and swung it like a baseball bat. I almost went to my knees the pain was so bad, it just out of nowhere. Other than those times though it's a lot better than it used to be but I don't want to risk any further injury. If I get back into deadlifting and find it doesn't hurt I may do some of that.

Also, any input here. My school has a pretty legit indoor rock wall that goes up 40 feet. I'm pretty sure I can use it for free. I know actual rock climbing would be good for strength, but would this help to maintain/reboot old strength? Just another idea to add to the list.

I'd do it for fun. I don't see it helping with anything but grip strength.

That's what I was thinking. But then again I'm doing a lot of pulling with bi's and back. But yeah forearm/grip is what I was mainly thinking. Only have done it once or twice but do remember it being pretty fun.

Strength is so specific. The only thing that really will "wake up" your muscles and strength is to eat well and train regularly with loads that tax your system. It's a weird thing. You can layoff lifting for months, even years and come back and get most of your strength back in a few months. It seems like it just lies dormant and is more of a CNS memory pattern that needs dusting off. I would say Rock Climbing is a great activity for extra work capacity, but not going to be enough for what you are asking about. More of a GPP activity - using strength in the real world. Just my opinion.

What do you guys think of this gym in my college town? It's a dedicated CrossFit gym. http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Gy...59810247401979 Check out the pictures section, there's some pics that you can get a pretty decent idea of what's in it. The CrossFit classes are expensive as hell but I can get an open membership for $30 a month. They say I am welcome whenever but to please stay out of the classes way obviously. I don't know what to look for in a CrossFit gym but this place looks pretty legit. Platforms, rings, ropes, boxes, KB's, whiteboards, chalk, etc.

If they have open gym time and will let you do what you want, I would join. I stopped going to the bako box because they made me do their stupid workout before I could do my own thing. By then I was too tired to do anything worth while anyways.

    Aww shit, there's Keith.

I think 30/mo for a legit xFit gym isn't bad, dude. As long as they have enough room, bumper plates, decent bars, ropes, rings, pullup bars, boxes, KBs, rowers and med-balls. Are you just hitting the WOD on crossfit.com or what?

I've only done one WOD and that was from Bako... I just kinda want to get into a sweet gym that has tons of room for expansion of BW stuff. I know my pullup bar and PVC dip station in the basement of my house is gonna get old fast. This gym definitely has rowers, there's a picture of like 8 lined up next to each other. Has rings, bars, bumper plates, platforms, boxes, KB's. Unsure on ropes (they have jumpropes) and med balls though.

Also, another dumb question. Does doing cardio before strengthening workouts hinder progress...? I'm thinking yes if I recall correctly but not sure on it. I should do BW Workout (strength) -> run (cardio) -> TKD (kinda cardio; intervals) right?
