The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

excellent advice everyone. thanks a bunch.

zen - ill try that. lats are a hard muscle to understand.

dan - thanks dude i'm def. gonna try those, prob tomorrow since my lats arent sore at all lol.

irish - alrighty dude will do. if i can manage a respectable amount of reps w/ free weight ill try with the weight!

hey guys - does full RoM make a huge deal? obviously it does for the end of the lift, but does it make a bunch of diff if my arms arent fully locked out on the decline?

To be honest, I dont even lock out at decline. I keep strain on the muscle the entire time by stopping short of a free hang.

If you can chin your bodyweight x10 more than once (which you do obviously) you can easily add 15-25lbs and bang out 6-8 reps. You will be quite surprised how much a difference it makes. Its like a completely different exercise

dan - same here. if i go to full lockout it puts a ton of stress on my biceps tendon and takes forever so i start getting numb.

irish - thanks for the information, man. appreicate you stoping in and helping! if i add weight and can do 6-8 weights, how many sets should i do? at least 25 reps?

I like to shoot for the usual 4 sets. Find a weight that you can swing 4x8. If you cant do it...do what you can, and either try to add reps until you get a solid 4x8 or 4x10, or reduce the weight so you can right off the bat. Treat it like any other lift...try to always be adding. I prefer 4x10 FWIW. If you want to hit the Bi's, do supine grip...its money. I find it doesnt hit your back nearly as much though, so if thats your focus, stick with the standard.

Things that have helped my lats are were deads, rows and chins..in that order. I really need to start up on chins again. I was doing 2 chins (hey...i am a fat arse..what can I say) between deads/bench tonight and could really feel it in my lats.

Have you been doing any form of BB rows? Try doin the bent over BB row..both over hand/underhand and mix it up...see which work better. And as irish said def do some weighted chins.

thats the spirit dude....also maybe try a wider grip on DL's..I know that sorta adds more stress on the lats, for me any way.

my grip is about 1 inch inside the pinky rings, is that wide? (i.e, my pinkies are 1 inch inside of the rings). today when i was pulling i THOUGHT i felt my LEFT middle lat being worked a little bit, only to find out i just yanked on the bar wrong or something and it ached for a few seconds, lol. i was sad.

Jed, the pics look good, bro. Don't be so critical of yourself. I didn't even start lifting until I was 18. They say that a man is not fully physically matured until the age of about 26, so you got some more time on your side, bro. They also say that most powerlifters are in their prime in their 30s. "They" say a lot though; just putting things into perspective for you.

As for your pecs and delts: dips, overhead pressing and time. Weighted dips and gaining weight are the only two things that ever seemed to change the appearance of my chest. OH Pressing will help your delts grow and more time so that you can finish filling out. You're only 17, man. For those lats, you should be feeling something with those chinups. Get a vid if you can, I'd like to see how you're executing them. Also, big Deadlifts will give you that "****-off" look to your back that you want. Stick with them, trust me.

It's good you're taking the time to learn all this. Don't get too caught up in the minor stuff though. It always still comes down to move heavy weight, eat well, be patient. Doing good, bro.

thanks, K. i guess im just frustrated. i know im built, but i can be so much better. that kinda thing.

im doing dips once a week, and OH press (mili press) once a week. 5x5 each. also BB bench. i can do a 5x5 of weighted dips, but something like 3x10 then 2x5 makes me burn alot more. should i stick with 5x5? and is 5x5 good for 'big deadlifts'? im still trying to get my conventional form down so i think more reps lower weight would help there. tried chins today - see below.

    okay workout today. good squats.

    GHR : 25lb x5, 15lb x5, 10lb 3x5

chins : x10, x10, x9, x6, x5... felt my lats somewhat. more than anything so far. they dont ache at all though. palms facing me.. will try weighted next time, i can rep these decently.

squat : 135 warmup, 185x5, 195x5, 205x5, 215x5, 225x5... felt good. squats were deep and padless, like always. i dont want to say ATF, but they are deep. nice to finally put 2 cookies on each side and rep it out again.

T bar rows : 125 5x5... solid. still no lats tho.

'at a boy. I still don't see 50 total chins on that sheet. Should have been x10/x10/x9/x6/x5/x5/x5. Working up to that initial 5 sets of 10 is some serious voodoo on the lats, I'm telling ya. After you do that, you'll feel your lats flared, and then it is time for the weighted. To this day, after not touching chins for several weeks I will not throw weight on until I know I can hit 5 sets of ten at bodyweight. Something about that number, seriously.

Good deal on the squats. ATFs are a waste of perfectly good strength, IMO Don't expect to feel the lats in those T-Bars unless something goes wrong. While lats do help pull horizontally, they are really designed to work best pulling you vertically (chins). There are a dozen other muscles in the back that will take over when pulling something on more of a horizontal or even upward angle (T-Bars).
