The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

i beleive two weeks ago i went for a 1rm and got only 275 or 285 (yes thats really only 5-10lbs over my bench). it was narrow stance and below paralell, but thats not an excuse, just sayin. i recently changed my stance to a little bit wider, and not quite as deep. still below paralell and feet are about 3 inches outside of delts. next week i may see how 225 feels and might shoot for a higher 1rm.

the 325 is my all time PR. that was last spring or so when i was around 188 or so. those old PR's are from about the same time a year ago actually. but the bench was PL style bench, squat was ATG narrow (so almost like now), and deadlift was sumo style. now i lift more BB or 'conventional' bench, conventional DL, and i jsut explained my squat.

    so atm my PR's are

    bench 280 (yesterday)
squat 275 (i think, bout 2 weeks old)
dead 375 (bout 2 weeks old)

Ahh ok. I've never tried a sumo deadlift... Do you think it's easier or harder than conventional?

easier. just imo, but i think theres less form involved because the ROM is shorter. conv uses more stuff like quads and all that i think, cuz it hits my whole body alot harder than sumos did.

Damn, nice bench, son. That's only a few lbs away from a PR now isn't it? WTF with the handstand pushups too. Gonna make me have to get back on that thing and compete for reps, lol. If you wanna add mass to your abs, you're gonna have to start adding weight to your ab work. Weighted ab pulldows (on the lat machine or with bands like I do) build some pretty great bulk there, IMO. The bar bends, weighted situps, heavy squats and DLs will build them up too.

That's some crazy **** about your truck. I've known a couple other people that have had that happen to them too. Funny thing is that they said the same exact thing you did: "the whole wheel+tire came off the ****ing car" Glad nothing bad happened from that.

Interesting about the sumo deadlift. I never really tried sumo, just always went with conventional. Sumo looks tougher to me.

It all depends on how your built. I personally have a hard time pulling conventional safely because my injuries in the past (when i broke my back). I agree with you though, sumo feels easier. That may not be the case with other people though.

Basically if you have no hip/groin issues, pull sumo. Learn proper technique and form using that stance and give it time. It should treat you very well.

thanks to all you brothers posting your support. you guys seriously kick arse, no lies whatsoever. hopefully ill get to 225x20, just give me some time haha! dan, i never had problems w/ hip or groin or anything actually, i just felt like sumo wasnt working any part of my body. i could do a 3x3 of 350 355 360 on sumo and not feel a thingthe next day. w/ conventionals i feel it wokring me alot more.

well went to state in des moines and our guy lost his first two, so hes out for good. he wrestled 140 class. lost his first 6-2 (pin in 3rd) and his second 6-3. too bad, but big congrats to making it to state anyways, thats a huge accomplishment.
