I have a couple friends in track who throw and they all said it was really fun, so on my senior year I decided to try out. Our first day was today and WOW was I surprised. I'm one of the smaller kids there (180 and lean, most of the kids are pretty chubby) but in terms of lifting strength I'm positive I've got higher numbers then about everybody.
All we threw was discuss today, I had a real hard time letting it *roll* off my fingers and not my pinky. How long does it take to really start to pick up the form, at least to the point where I can really start using power? (I'm aware that perfecting it can take years). One gangly looking freshman was getting it already... It was pretty humbling to see some of these chubby, slobby kids launch that thing though.
I figure I'll try it untill the end of the week and if i'm still awful I'll just lift weights at home.
We throw shot put tomorrow; maybe i'll do better with that? :-p
