The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    I suck at throwing.

    I have a couple friends in track who throw and they all said it was really fun, so on my senior year I decided to try out. Our first day was today and WOW was I surprised. I'm one of the smaller kids there (180 and lean, most of the kids are pretty chubby) but in terms of lifting strength I'm positive I've got higher numbers then about everybody.

    All we threw was discuss today, I had a real hard time letting it *roll* off my fingers and not my pinky. How long does it take to really start to pick up the form, at least to the point where I can really start using power? (I'm aware that perfecting it can take years). One gangly looking freshman was getting it already... It was pretty humbling to see some of these chubby, slobby kids launch that thing though.

    I figure I'll try it untill the end of the week and if i'm still awful I'll just lift weights at home.

    We throw shot put tomorrow; maybe i'll do better with that? :-p

    I don't really know what to tell you. Your maxes for your lifts don't really add up to me. If your squat and deadlift are what they are then you seem to have decent power coming from your legs which is critical for throwing. However your vertical is pretty low so it doesn't seem like you have great explosion. If you still weigh in the 170 area you may want to try and focus on throwing javelin. At the high school level you don't need to be beastly to throw shot but you do need good explosion and a little bit of either size or height. My PR for shot was 45 ft. and I barely ever went to practice. I just used my strength, explosion, and height to my advantage. However when it comes to throwing javelin it is pretty much technique and experience. You can find a lot of skinny jav kids that can throw a pretty good distance. I threw 45 in shot but 140 in jav wasn't enough to cut it in the big meets.

    I hated discuss cuz it's one of those things you have to practice a lot to get down. Ask your coach if you can bring one home with you or spend some extra time after practice using one. The most critical things are getting the disc to roll off your index finger and getting it to roll off at the correct angle. If you can perfect these two things along with your spin you can have a decent throw no matter what your strength.

    Yep, looking at your stats you're defenitely lacking explosion. For as strong as you are you should be jumping a lot higher and running a lot faster. Try adding more plyometrics in your routine. They could make a difference with someone like you.
    6'0" 180
    Vertical 29" Running= 37" 40= 4.70
    Big 3: Squat= 320
    ........Bench= 275
    ........Deadlift= 350ish?
    OL: .....Clean= 270 150%
    ...........Snatch= 200 111%

    hey man in throwing technique is so important if you dont have the genetic gift of of size a week is definetally not enough time to decided if you will be good at it. keep at it and you just need to lean to use your strength in a different way
