The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

It’s no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Deadlift.

Okay today in P.E., I was doing flatbar dead lift, and a senior told me I was just hurting myself and deadlift is stupid. Is this true? or it could be that he sucks at it, lol. I honestly don't think i'm hurting myself and plus I need to work on my legs for track, so am I really hurting myself?

Maybe, if your form is off. Otherwise tell him to shut up.

Deadlifts are great for strengthening your back and for general overall body strengthening, so long as you keep good form.

    So...ignore him.

Deadlifts mess up my back bad. I have these two huge things sticking out of my lower/mid back. Maybe I should stop.

Keep the weights light and learn the form. Watch as many videos as you can of deadlifting(both sumo and conventional). If you have someone you trust, have them help you with the form and watch you to see how you are doing. If you can post videos, take some of yourself pulling and we can help. If I pull on Saturday I'll take video and post it.

I hope you're starting with the bar and the bar alone. Do not add weight until you get the form down. It does not matter if it takes you a month to start adding weight to the bar, especially with a movement like the deadlift. If you want a very detailed description of how to do deadlifts and the other big compound lifts, I'd highly recommend picking up this book ~> CLICK ME

He doesn't know what he's talking about. Improper form is what destroys backs, not the lift. It's one of the best exercises you can perform for muscle growth/strength gains. If you need to work on your legs for track, you should also be squatting, doing unilateral leg exercises, jump squats, and anything else sport specific.

I don't know if you'll find it at the library, but good luck. Something unique about the book is that each exercise has their own flip book animation if you flip the pages really fast (there's four of them).

It's a college library, so there is a possibility. The flip book part sounds pretty nifty. I can get my form right from those pictures though, as well as doing a little research.

There is a ridiculous amount of information about how to do the lift with proper form and how to correct anything that you're doing wrong. It's basically a book to teach coaches how to train others, so you'll get a lot out of it.
