Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    The 5x5

    I was using the spreadsheet for the Bill Starr 5x5 and at week five I've begun to fail before I'm "supposed" to. I've gained two pounds while on it, and to be honest feel a bit stronger, but my numbers don't seem to be indicating that.

    Just looking for a bit of advice.

    Since I'm struggling with the 5 rep, would i tbe beneficial to try doing 3 reps instead, with perhaps a single assistance lift to aid each of my lifts?

    IE:

    Mondays (Bill Starr):

    5x5 Squat
    5x5 Flat Bench
    5x5 Rows
    4 sets of weighted situps
    2 sets of weighted hypers

    vs.

    Mondays (3x5)

    3x5 Squat
    2x8 Lunges
    3x5 Flat Bench
    2x8 Flies
    3x5 Rows
    2x8 Pull Ups

    2 sets of weighted hypers
    4 sets of weighted situps?

    I'm playing around with ideas here so I can continue through the Bill Starr program, make sure my stength gets to sufficient levels and then maybe go back down to perform the 5x5 in 5 or so weeks.

    Any experiences would be helpful here... Trying to get an idea or two here.

    It pretty much sums it up.

    How I do the 5x5 is spread out throughout the week and not all in one day. Chest on mon and legs on thur back on sat for example. I use the 5x5 for big exercises like squats, bench, and deadlift. You can use it for curls and other exercises, however I get the best bang for the buck with the big compound movements that I listed.

    When you say 3x5

    That means 3 sets, 5 reps each.

    If you do your version, it ceases to be Bill Starr's program. You'd have to call it KoSh's pseudo-Bill-Starr's 5x5.

    No it doesn't.

    In fact, that link you gave isn't Bill Starr's program.

    The 5x5 isn't a program in the first place, no matter who made it. Stop thinking it's a program. It's a methodology, not a program.

    Repeat that three times out loud, just to make sure you understand it, because I know I've typed it more than once.

    I meant 5x3.

    What I meant with the continuing Bill Starr's Method was pretty much just me saying I want to be able to jump back in where I left off once I've seen sufficient strength gains.
