The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

    Weightlifting shirts...

I don't understand these? Shaq doesn't wear little jets on his shoes. Wladimir Klitschko doesn't load his gloves with plaster of paris. What do they do exactly? Lift a bit of the weight for you? What's the point of that? If I invent some doctor octopus style arms and can bench 6000 pounds... what have I accomplished? How did these get started? Maybe I just don't understand what they do exactly.
Are they just protective? I watch the videos of the world records and it looks like they'd need half a ton on the bar just to get the shirt to crease a bit... why not just have everyone bench raw?

I am ridiculously ignorant to the world of powerlifting though

Because people enjoy both RAW and geared lifting. Get over it.

I could care less... but I was curious as to why. And is that really it? That people just like to see big numbers?

So you're allowed to use an apparatus that lifts the weight for you but you they won't pass you if your form is off?

You still have to have the strength to push the weight. You have to know how to get the most out of the equipment. Equipment often causes you to develop certain muscles when compared to lifting raw.

I tell you what, get yourself a little bit better understanding of it if you care to know. I understand that ignorance is bliss, so you must just be high all the time. Until you have a little more grasp of the concept of powerlifting, keep reading and keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

If you have a real, legitimate question and can phrase it well enough for us not to think you're a boob then some of us will give you the time of day.

We need them because we are weak and need to inflate our egos. Actually I leave all of my lifting up to a bottle of testosterone and a bench shirt.

Tiger Woods should be using a stick too right? How come it's not cheating when he buys the biggest, best, most advanced driver to put 20 extra yards onto his drive?

Anyone going to make a legitimate defense of this weightlifting shirt thing? Or are you all just going to continue with your snide comments? I will apologize for this thread if the shirts are soley to prevent injury. But I doubt that. But it can't be as immature as dudes just liking to see big numbers, can it? I thought the point was to see how much weight one could lift... why does the shirt need to be in the equation at all? How did the shirt thing even start? Do they test and regulate the strength of the lifters shirts?

Your analogy would be better suited if you had used as an example a golf club that swings itself. It would be pretty redundant wouldn't it?

You're trolling. The above comment was a good analogy to use.

Yes, they are for protection and yes you can lift more with them. Now go do some research and don't be an ass the next time you post on here.

Is Tiger even hitting driver anymore? Purists complain about that anyways within the golf world. And the point of weightlifting is to build and test your strength. Why load that equation with variables that are just complicating and unnecessary?

It seems to me the shirt is there so the numbers look bigger and for no other reason. I understand it's an accepted part of the community now and this meaningless jumble of text means nothing, but it just strikes me as stupid.

Stop with the debate. It's obvious you are just trying to be an ass and succeeding quite well I might add. Why don't you just go and sit in your running car in a closed garage for a few hours.

I think we should discontinue further discussions with completeNewb. It's clear he is just looking for attention.

Indeed strange. Single ply shirts are teh evil, but a triple-ply suit plus double-ply briefs and mile-long wraps causes far less of a stir.

Risk, they do. All the time, it's just generally between federations and not really amongst those that don't compete.

CompleteNewb, if you wish to start a debate, do so in a mature way. You can rephrase your question and preferably do a search first but if you really have no intentions of trying to learn then take it elsewhere. If you continue to troll and start attacking (very poorly) something that many of us take very seriously then you will be banned. These questions have been asked before. Do a search.
