    deadlift

    is using straps on it a bad thing. my coach gave them to me to use before and they definetely made it easier. plus im pretty hunchbacked so when i deadlift its hard for me to keep my back straight because if i think about trying to keep my back straight ill probably loose the weight. so is it ok if im slightly hunched over in the beginning as long as im straight up when i finish. and last but not least when you pick it up can you just drop it, or do you lower it to the floor.

    You should try them without straps, that's what everybody told me, but you can use them if you have to, but only when you're going really heavy, don't use them for normal reps (,,,,, ). Make sure your back is straight the whole time. Doesn't matter if you drop it at the top, unless your in competition.

    yeah, it dosnt make much difference to me with straps or not. its just the heavier the weight the more the bar digs into my skin. i can keep my back straight it just that when its straight its still slightly humped over.

    they arnt legal in competition so i dont use them
    plus if you use them you wont devolop the grip you can without them and will have girly hands, which some men like........dunno

    aight. it dosnt bother me to just get one rep or so in. its just when i get up to about 365 or so my hands start bleeding.

    ^^lol!!! yes sir. i should find out my max tomorrow hopefully. my coach is a fan of olympic lifts rather than the power lifts. according to him the powerlifting community and the olympic lifters are like waring tribes or something. but i like the powerlifts.

    thanks man. i definetely would like to be a powerlifter. i got clean maxes tomorrow and after i max i got bench and squat but hopefully that wont mess me up to much.

    I looked into the strap issue closely as I have girly hands and the bar would slip out of my hands at about 80% of my 1 rep max deadlift weight and decided that for me the best course of action was to strengthen my hands and after only 3 weeks I can now lift 95% of my 1 rep max deadlift.

    The problem I have seen with wrist straps, is you become dependent on them, at the gym last week I saw a dude who was about twice my size using straps to do 100kg/220lbs shoulder shrugs, I was supprised, I do more than that without the straps.

    So I recommend that if you do use straps, then only use them when you have to and that way your grip wiil continue to improve when you are not using them.

    Blood eh?

    I can't say I've ever bled from deadlifting (Hands, not shins). After a while, your hands will toughen up. It's not an issue.

    nothing wrong with straps. i have been using them because my deadlift weight is quite a bit more then what my grip can handle.

    train your grip separately and more frequently until it catches up to your dl weight

    Go strapless for as many sets as you can, then add straps when you drop teh bar. Follow up your DL session with some grip training and eventaully you'll be able to do it.

    PS if you're bleeding, get some chalk.

    Don't use them, your grip will suffer without clutching the heavy bars and you'll be screwed in comp.

    Ive torn callouses right open before deadlifting. I went with one of my buddies to this new gym which didnt allow chalk. It wasnt a pleasant experience. Took about 2 weeks for a new callous to form where the old one ripped off. Ive never used straps from the beginning and I can hold 365+ for a long time with no grip problems.

    Deadlift question,
    What is the spacing you guys recommend for your hands, compared to shoulders? I'm new to the deadlift, so sorry for the beginner question.

    The bar rarely grazes my shins unless I'm going really heavy, but on the way up it's normal for the bar to make contact with the shins.

    As far as hand placement, most place their hands about shoulder width, or a little wider. I'd say place them where you're comfortable.
