The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Straps aren't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you only use them when you really need them (i.e. grip is gone). I got into a bad habit of using them for most heavy DL's up until earlier this year, which allowed me to develop a pretty strong back but my grip was horrible, which I corrected by adding grip work for a few months. Fortunately or unfortunately, your grip is usually going to go before your back does, so you can't necessarily neglect your back because your grip can't keep up, which is where the straps come in, particularly with rack pulls or rows. Besides, I've seen Chuck use straps a few times

haha...my rack pulls and DB rows would be a lot higher if i used straps.

i do feel that if i start using them i will use them too much...i might start for heavy DB rows and occasionaly when i do rack pulls, who knows. if so, i will kick the grip work up even more. i need it.

i stepped on the scale before my workout today and i was 293. unacceptable!

i will be upping my calories even more, roughly 6500 calories. it will be rare if you see me not eating or drinking something.

what do you guys think of 2 sessions a day? i'm thinking of trying them every now and then. i am not sure what i'd do for bench days, but on DE lower days and occasionally ME lower day, i'd go in at night and do reverse hypers and stretch.

    my stretching/foam rolling is:

10 min of foam rolling/stretching in the morning, mostly hips and back

foam rolling before workouts, occasionally static stretching after workouts

20-30 min of static stretching and foam rolling before bed

this has made me feel great and loose, and with 6500 calories a day i think my body could handle reverse hypers later on in the day. if its too much, i will of course back off. be sure to let me know what all of you think about this.

    ME squat/dl

    *foam rolling*

box squats, about an inch and a half below parallel, LOOSE ass viking briefs, walked out:
    bar x 10 (raw)
    135 x 3
    225 x 3
    315 x 3 (belt)
    365 x 2
425 x 1 (added my old vikings on top of the others here)
    500 x 1
    405 x 3

speed pulls, alternating sumo & conventional :
    225 x 3 x 1
    275 x 3 x 1

pull throughs, 2 sec hold at the top:
    stack x 2 x 10
    stack +20 lbs x 10

band abduction, light band for 3 x 10

    hangman abs, green for 3 x 10

    seated calves, 3 x 15

i added in my old vikings looking for more support, because Ginny has my suit. plus a couple of guys at cell block use 2 pairs of briefs, so i thought it couldn't hurt to try. granted, my newer vikings are a size 50 and my old ones are 52's, and i should be wearing 48's or even 46's at this point in time. the second pair didn't do too much, but at the rate i'm planning on eating they should fit nice and snug very soon.

it bothers me that i hit 500 today fairly easily and my last meet squat was 475 with knee wraps and my suit on!!!!!!

i am getting more serious than i have been about my training and plan on hitting big numbers in February.

I won't let you use them too much. They might be useful for your last set of kroc rows or something like that and just don't use them til you need to to work your back.

6500 calories a day! Oh brother, you might have to hook up to an IV! of course, this is coming from my perspective. LOL

    yes... yes it would.

Nice job with the 500 lb. squat! I only use straps on my last set of rows, or shrugs. There's times when you back can keep going and gain from the extra work where you grip would usually give out. I use my grip until it is dead... then add straps to finish back work.

    good idea.

the 500 is a decent number in just briefs. a little more work and i think i can hit 545 in just briefs.

sure, but you don't have to worry about it this weekend, unless we use a high board as a tricep movement, maybe with very heavy bands.

i think just wait until i get my shirt.

brent's squat at worlds...this was after totaling a van a week earlier, 20 stitches in the top of his head and a concussion, doc told him not to lift anything over 50 lbs for 3 weeks, and he still pulled out an 825 squat @ 198.

    standing military:
    bar x 10
    95 x 3 x 8
    115 x 1 x 8
    135 x 3 x 5, these were push presses

    overhead rope extensions:
    35 x 10
    60 x 10
    75 x 10

    Kroc rows:
    80's x 20
    110's x 20
    140's x 20 (used straps here)

    pec dec:
    105 x 10
    135 x 10
    150 x 10

    hammer curls:
    30's x 10
    40's x 10
    50's x 10

    20 min elliptical

big PR on the Kroc rows, but it was the first time using straps. most i've got with the 140's without straps is 10.

my bodyweight is hovering around 296 mid-day, so i really need to step up the eating if i want to fill out the 308 class. i'm in the middle of eating a roast beef/turkey/pepperoni/provolone sandwich right now. its starting to remind me of the good ole days...
