The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Doing Walking Lunges Outside On the Sidewalk/Street

I am about to buy an olympic bar and a couple of plates and going outside to do walking lunges. I think it will help my legs in building more muscle and give an alternative to squats. I also think it will look cool when people driving by on the street see me walking with that on my shoulders. I saw Ronnie Coleman do them in his video.

Does anyone else here do walking lunges? How do they compare in muscle building to normal barbell squats? Thanks.

I can back squat 165 for reps, and do walking lunges out in the street with a 95 - but that's because it's the heaviest I can haul out there, clean and press, walk the length of the sidewalk, then press and drop without a spot.

    Hope this helps.

That looks awesome Built! I live right off the street and there is a mile long or so sidewalk. I can't wait.

I love walking lunges, but I do them with dumbells and inside the gym. I do them on my heavy leg day so I never go over 20 total reps, no need for a really long walkway for me.

I like them. I did them frequently at one time when I had more space. I had worked up to 225 clean and press or 315 out of the rack.

    This guy likes them too...

I saw that awhile back, just seems the risk out weighs the reward. Just seems the knee is in such a vulnerable spot with so much wt it could be bad. He's very impressive though, and it must feel fairly safe to him, + 3 spotters.

Well I don't plan to do them with heavy weights - just 135 lbs. Trying to train some endurance into my legs. Also, I can't do them with dumbbells past 40-50 lbs per hand because my wrists are torn up from bowling for so many years. Over the shoulders lunges are the only ones I can do.

Just make sure on the street you're not going to hit a car or another pedestrian. What specifically are you looking to get out of it? Not that lunges are bad but there might be something else specific that'll help if you don't have a lot of room to do them.

Indeed - the sidewalk outside my gym is really wide so I have this "luxury" (if you can call going outside with a barbell and getting honked at "luxury") - when the weather sucks I just do split squats. I really like walking lunges better though - they seem to hit more than split squats.

Hmm I have never seen a gym so small that you couldn't just do them inside. Personally I would feel like a pompous ass doing lunges on public street.

How many serious accidents has that barbell been through?

What do you mean? I just picked it up and it had rust on it. I used rust remover and now it is polished like new. I wasn't away barbells can break?
