The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

Thanks Chubs. I'll stick around a while.

Note to self: I'm running the basic 5/3/1 Program as prescribed. However, instead of doing really high rep light weight assistance work, I'll be adding some heavier assistance, and one or two extra exercises. At least, that's the goal. I'm going to play it by ear. I also want to maintain some cardio, so I may do a couple 2 a days, or throw in cardio day or two in between my main four-lift 5/3/1 lifting days. Hopefully I'll run this for at least 3-4 months, if I like it.

    5/3/1 Week 1 Shoulder Press

    Wednesday PM Session

    Shoulder Press
    warmup
    95 x 5
    100 x 5
    105 x 7 +2 reps

    DE Shoulder Press
    70 x 8
    70 x 12

    Pull-ups
    bw x 7
    bw x 5
    bw x 5
    bw x 5

    Dips
    +45 lbs x 7

So, I know I'm probably not suppose to do 3 days of 5/3/1 back-to-back-to-back, but I felt so good I couldn't stay out of the gym. I admit, I was leery of a day dedicated to shoulder press, but man, I like it. Its a movement I don't do a lot, so hopefully I'll have some play in these numbers and see some quick gains. That 105 x 7 was tough. I definitely didn't have an 8th rep, 7 barely went up. For some reason, my pullups felt phenomenal today. Great speed. Thats the most bw reps I've been able to string together on pullups in a while. I was really psyched about it.

I threw a set of dips in because my wife asked what a dip was, and I proceeded to show her by doing 2. She couldn't do one but said, "Its ok, your arms were shaking after you did 2." ....... So I knocked out a few weighted. Silly woman, I don't know what the hell she was doing out of the kitchen

    5/3/1 Week 1 Squat

    Friday PM Session

    Squats
    warmup
    190 x 5
    205 x 5
    215 x 7 +2 reps

    Leg Extensions
    3 x 10 x 130lb

    Calf Extensions
    3 x 10 x 130lb

    Weighted Abs

Squats felt mixed today. Almost missed the 205 x 5, but switched my stance a little bit, got a better setup for the 215 set. I still wish I was making up more ground on these, but it will come.

    5/3/1 Week 2 Bench

    BB BP
    warmup
    180 x 3
    190 x 3
    205 x 3

    Cable Flys
    6 or 7 sets x 12

    Tricep Press
    80 x 12
    90 x 7
    90 x 7

    Tricep Rope Press
    90 x 10
    90 x 8
    90 x 7

Super Set Incline Machine and Cable Curls
    2 sets each

Good session. Last set was suppose to be with 200, but 190 felt too light so I went with 205. 205 felt so light when I held it, I was mad I didn't get more than 3. 4 almost made it up. Oh well, next time. Important thing was it was a super easy three. Got a lot of solid volume in today. Felt great

    5/3/1 Week 2 Squats

    Tuesday PM Session

    Squats
    warmup***(see below)
    205 x 3
    215 x 3
    230 x 7 (+4 reps)

    Hypers
    bw x 12
    +25 x 12

I pussed out on the rest of the assistance. I dropped a 35lb plate (non-bumper plate) on my toes from chest high right before my squat sets. I didn't look at it till just now when I got home. Figured even if they were broke it wouldn't further damage it if I did my squats anyway. It appears most of my toes are just bruised, but my second toe is definitely broken. Hopefully it won't interfere with my lifting. It hurt like hell, but I could still squat. We'll see how it goes.

Ouch dude. Broken toes suck! I broke my littlest toe a couple years ago. Not much to do about those. Way to just squat anyway though dude, that is badass. Be sure to keep your weight in your heels!

Thanks paul. Yea, my second toe is f'ed. The others look decent, just badly bruised. It definitely forced me to focus on keeping the weight on my heels, lol.

The WAVMO, week 1. (The Workout Alex V. Mentioned Once)

    ME Squat
    warmup
    225 x 3
    255 x 3
    275 x 1

Plyo - 3 ft box jumps
    2 x 10

    One-arm DB Row
    55 x 10 each
    60 x 8 each
    65 x 6 each
    70 x 4 each

    Pullups
    bw x 5
    +10lb x 3
    bw x 5

Full court sprints x a bunch

Great session today. I had estimated my prior squat max (pretty confident in my estimation) to be around 255. Hit a triple at that weight today, so things are going in the right direction. Hit a slump last week and took the week off from lifting. Then I went to a seminar that Alex Viada did on Sunday, and it was awesome. Great practical advice. He's smart as hell, but dumbed it down where I could understand it. Anyway, he kind of threw out a workout split as an example, and since it lined up pretty well with my goals, figured I'd give it a shot. Trying to add strength but still be able to run and be "athletic", so I have high hopes for his ideas.

Thanks Kev. Basically, his idea is to structure your high intensity, low volume movements in the same part of your workout week in order to give your body and your mind more of a mental break. The latter part of my workout week will be higher volume, lower intensity.

You squatted your 1rm three times, that's a good day. And of course I like the box jumps. So are you abandoning 5/3/1 for now?

Chubrock - you don't even know you futile your efforts will be, lol

Kills - yea, 5/3/1 was a lot of constant strain. Mentally and physically intense, every day in the gym. I'm still focusing on the Big 3, and will be doing reps of 5, 3 , and 1 on ME days, but really focusing on having heavy intense days early in the week, followed by DE/Reps work later in the week

The WAVMO. Week 1, ME Upper

    BB BP
    warmup
    205 x 1
    215 x 1
    225 x 1 tied PR
    235 x 1 (+10 lb PR)
    240 x miss
    185 x 4
    185 x 4
    185 x 2

    Incline Machine
    3 x 5 +140

    Curls for gurls
    30s x 10
    35s x 10
    40s x 10

    Tricep Pushdown
    90 x 10
    110 x 10
    130 x 7

    Pace Run
    10:00 min @ 8 min/mile

Hit a 10lb all-time PR today. I'm just gonna let that sink in, feels good. Feels damn good. Last bench session I only hit 215 for a double, so when I went for 225 I was pretty concerned I might not get it. It went up so easy, I literally checked the weight 3-4 times to make sure I didnt have a 35 on there or something. 235 was just about as fast, spotter actually said it looked better than 225. Went for 240, but at that point I think I was a little psyched out, plus I hadn't prepped for pressing 240. Honestly, I had been hoping to hit 230 maybe, 225 definitely. I would have changed leadup sets if I knew I was going for 235+. But anyway, it was a great surprise today.

Going to be throwing in some running 3-4 times a week to stay somewhat in shape, endurance-wise. I am in pitiful shape still. That 10 min run was tough. Heartrate was 160-170 by the end. I was wiped out. But I'm keeping it, don't want to be too one dimensional.
