The Five Biggest Contradictions in Fitness

Itís no secret that when people contradict themselves, it has the effect of making the flaws in their actions or statements seem glaringly obvious. But what about when WE ourselves get caught contradicting ourselves by someone else?

What do I eat to lose fat but Gain muscle?

What should I be eating to gain muscle but still lose fat at the gym?

    Is it even possible?

Should I do cardio on my off days?

Should I not be eating everything in sight?

    I'm 5'8 185lb's. I don't have much muscle on me.

What to eat is important, but for losing fat it comes down to how much you eat. You can get fat eating "healthy".

    Is it even possible?
For newbies and people coming off long layoff, it is possible initially to gain muscle and lose fat, however that novelty wears off after a few months.

Should I do cardio on my off days?
Sure, but its not going to help in your quest to gain muscle and lose fat.

Should I not be eating everything in sight?
Thats generally applicable for most people regardless of cutting or bulking.

    I'm 5'8 185lb's. I don't have much muscle on me.
Do you know what your bodyfat% is?You might want to lean out as much as possible. This would require a caloric deficit, i.e. eating 10-20% less than your maintenance cals.

In setting up a diet, make sure you are getting 1g/lbm of protein and 1g/lbm of fats. Fill up the rest of your cals with pro, carb, fats any way you like.

    lbm = bodyweight = bodyfat

You won't gain muscle mass and lose fat generally so you need to decide if you want to gain muscle or lose fat....when you decide that the people here can be very helpful in giving you the knowledge to achieve your goal. IMO I would lose the fat first, but that is becuase I hate fat, but some people have fat that disperses evenly through there body and isn't as noticeable. Its up to you

I disagree.... maybe you won't gain as much muscle but when you do cardio on your off days you're still burning fat. Think about it.... if you're lifting 3 - 4 times a week with no cardio as opposed to 3 - 4 days of lifting with cardio on off days..... you're going to lose more fat if you do the cardio....

I know that the ideal way to lose muscle is eat more calories then you burn.... but if you do that on the days you lift there is NO DOUBT you will gain muscle..... then the next day you can just follow up with cardio and burn some fat....

There isn't some rule that says that it's impossible to lose muscle and lose fat at the same time.... the human body is an amazing thing....

By doing cardio, you are limiting the fat gain and possibly even the muscle gain. You are just creating a smaller caloric surplus.

Think about it.... if you're lifting 3 - 4 times a week with no cardio as opposed to 3 - 4 days of lifting with cardio on off days..... you're going to lose more fat if you do the cardio....
    See above.

I know that the ideal way to lose muscle is eat more calories then you burn....
    You mean gain muscle.

but if you do that on the days you lift there is NO DOUBT you will gain muscle..... then the next day you can just follow up with cardio and burn some fat....
To burn fat you have to be in caloric deficit, one or two days out of 7 is not going to create that deficit. Lets say on lifting days you eat maintenance+20% and off-days you eat Maintenance-20% +cardio. At the end of the week there is a chance you will likely be at equilibrium and thus no muscle gain/loss as well as no fat gain/loss.

There isn't some rule that says that it's impossible to lose muscle and lose fat at the same time.... the human body is an amazing thing....
Its not impossible, but its tough for the average lifter with average genetics. You can try tricked up diets that let you lose fat while gaining some lbm (UD2.0 comes to mind), but you really are going to have to decide on a goal: Gain muscle with some fat or Burn fat and maintain/possibly lose muscle.

Or you can venture into the anabolic forum and exchange pleasantries with compassionate souls like Hatred.

    Well I rather build muscle.
I'm going up in weight, but it doesn't seem like I'm getting fatter. Then
again it's only been 3 weeks.

Everyone knows that you just take a pill a day and don't need to even workout.
