My brother just turned 13 in May and is entering grade 8 in September. He would like to start alittle weight lifting, right now he does push ups, sit ups, and various exercises with a medicine ball. I've heard conflicting things about children and weight lifting. I've always had it in my head that if you start weight lifting at a young age you'll "stunt" your growth or mess up your joints. However, I recently read an article about how good strength training can be for children. Except the article wasn't specific about what "strength training" included. He'd like to start curling, various dumbbell presses, bench pressing, and squats. So i'm wondering at what age he should start his free weight training. I started free weight lifting once i entered high school and i have had no problems. I've had friends tell me that you're supposed to start when your eighteen, or when you've stopped growing, are they right?
So my questions is, simply put, when is the proper age to start free weight training?

im no expert but im pretty sure we keep growing after 18 years, but i would just not have him do any standing work or overhead lifts ,squats deadlifts standing military press ect ect to be on the safe side, have him work on some upper body and just have him do some stairmasters/running for his legs lol just a random idea for a middle school kid.
I tend to not push any lifting on kids, without supervision they usually goof around and use sloppy form. I will advise starting with bodyweight exercises though.

when he wants to start is the perfect age to start, lifting weights will not stunt your growth or cause any problems.
have him do basic solid moves, make sure he is resting his body enough (don't work out the same muscle groups two days in a row)\
squats, benchpress, deadlifts, chin-ups, shoulder presses, culrs and calf raises are a good place to start.
He should be alright. I started right before 8th grade and I was about 5'0 tall i'm 20 now and 6'0/6'1 maybe I could have been taller who knows, but i'm a decent height.
