    BBall workouts

    We got any serious bball players who lift primarily to improve their game? I am curious as to what kind of workout you guys do. I am just doing a generic push/pull/legs split alternating through maybee 4 workouts a week and am planning on doing some plyometrics once my leg strenth gets a little better. Any thoughts on what exercises/muscles I should focus on if my main goals are to become quicker, a better jumper, and a more powerful presence in the lane (I usualy play 3 or 4).

    i'm not a very serious player, although i used to play regulary. Plyometrics and the workout ur doing should be fine for becoming stronger and faster etc. However, in order to become a presence in the lane, u need to get bigger, and thus eat more.

    That's usually the posotion I play. I'm not sure how big you are, but I'm about 5'11". So that means that I need to get big. How big? Look at an NBA player. Ok, they have been training longer, but the 5'11" or 6' players are anywhere from 160 to 180 pounds and don't have an once of fat.

    Next, as for workouts do jump higher, you'll want to do the traditional squats, deadlifts, power cleans, shoulder presses, abs, etc. Make sure to mix in variations such as jump squats, bench press throws, etc. And you'll definetly need plyometrics. You can either do them on seperate days (make sure you're getting enough recovery time) or immediately after each set of lifting (i.e. a set of depth jumps immediately after each squat set.

    Relative strength is also important. You need to be able to lift a lot in comparison to your bodyweight. Kobe Bryant does squats of 400 pounds with chains. Sprinter's squat 3x their bodyweight, and can jump onto boxes higher than their shoulders. To get relative strength you need to stay at a certain weight and train your neurons to recuit a higher percentage of you're muscle fibers.

    That's what countless hours of research has told me. Right now I'm in the bulking phase, then cutting and working on relative strength.

    Vertical 29" Running= 37" 40= 4.70
    Big 3: Squat= 320
    ........Bench= 275
    ........Deadlift= 350ish?
    OL: .....Clean= 270 150%
    ...........Snatch= 200 111%

    I'd like to see the video of either of these. the kobe squat is believable, but jumping up onto boxes higher than their shoulders i'd like to see.

    Kobe bryant is acually extremely strong, If you see him in person you would not be at all suprised by that squat, If his body fat is higher than 7 percent i would be very suprised

    Incline Dumbbell Bench Press 2 sets, 10 reps, 100-120 lbs.

    Do those look like 100s? He is a tall guy......just looks strange...

    those look like 60's to me... or 80's, usually 100's are 5 plates, and they're solid steel.

    yeah i dont believe that at all....i have seen other athletes jump that hight but i dont believe kobe can. 400 squat, yeah i can see that

    As far as your basketball training goes, A aspect of training a lot of people neglect is that you have to have great feet, when you really thing about it, having good footwork is the most important aspect of basketball, wheather your a guard trying to cross someone over to get in the lane or a post player executing a move, if you dont have great footwork, your move will either be slow or you will end up tripping over yourself and possibly turning it over. A great , great way to train this is jump roping, if you get past the premature frustration that stops most people from using this, this improves your conditioning, footwork , quickness, and after about a month of this your verticle will explode. because if you jump for 10 minutes, and your get in about 2 jumps a second, that is about 1,200 jumps in 10 minutes, and doing that for 4-5 weeks, your body will have no choice but to make you a great jumper. I have a great jump rope workout I will post in a separate thread

    I think I heard about the Kobe squat from one of Kelly Bagget's articles on his website Not sure where he got it from though.

    A great , great way to train this is jump roping, if you get past the premature frustration that stops most people from using this, this improves your conditioning, footwork , quickness, and after about a month of this your verticle will explode.
    But if that's all you do, you'll eventually reach a point where to jump higher you'll have no choice but to increase the max force your legs can exert by doing heavy squats, cleans, etc. It's good to combine the two aspects, strength and good feet, for the best results.
