Editors Intro

Wow, first newsletter in 2005, and we go change things up huh?

Welcome to the first issue of the brand spanking new Wannabebig Iron to Ink newsletter.

I want to use this issues "editor's intro" to give you some insight on how I expect the newsletter to evolve. This intro will be a touch longer than normal because of this and then service will resume to a shorter intro, I promise!

Ok, so first off, the newsletter will be every 2 weeks, beginning Jan. 1 and Jan. 15th, linking in to our article updates schedule. Yep, if you have not heard yet we have moved to bi-weekly updates on Wannabebig. Maki has gotten all excited over the Christmas period and decided to give you guys and girls fortnightly updates!

This change dictated another important move. Maki and I chatted over the Christmas period and decided I would take on the responsibility of publishing the newsletter in 2005. Maki wants to concentrate more on the article updates, particularly now that we have gone bi-weekly. This was very exciting for me as I have some great ideas for the newsletter!

Well…. That's my story. If you ask Maki, he'll say I asked, he said screw you, I pleaded for days, and he gave in. Then again, he'll say anything to make me look bad

So… I am now the editor of the newsletter. Over the Christmas break I sat down and thought about what makes a good email newsletter. I thought about the newsletters I personally subscribe to and why I really don't read them. My conclusion was that for the most part they are boring!!

You'll also see we have some new features: "Tips and Tidbits" and "Website pick". I want to include a "Wannabebig Letters" section also, so I can feature emails from our readers. If you want to email in your comments, feedback, send an email to letters@wannabebig.com and I might feature it if it makes me look good. You'll also start to see interviews with forum members, journal spotlights and hot forum topics!

This newsletter will not be stagnant. I will continuously try to improve it and I will look to review which features are a success and refine it so that it gets better and better each issue.

Hmm…. what else? Well some other boring, but important commitments. It will be on time. It will always be archived in our newsletter archive.

Ok, I have ONE more important thing to announce. Our good friend Chip Conrad is holding 2 workshops in January that I would like to let you know about. The JUST FOR TRAINERS Advanced Clinic Series is 2 courses. They are Get Off Your Ass “Core” training without lying down and Machines Be Damned!! - Training Beyond Traditional Freeweight Concepts. For more information on these courses please see www.bodytribe.com I have gone on long enough and by now you should just want to get on and read the damn thing! So, enjoy!

Cheers, and see you next time

Tips and Tidbits

Stretch your Bench

Reciprocal inhibition is a beautiful thing when applied properly. If your chest has taken a vacation from your bench press, try stretching your lats before attempting this lift. Simply pull down on the bar as if you were trying to pull the bar through the bench press rings. As a result this will relax the lats allowing the chest to contract more efficiently. Happy benching!

BBQ For Leanness

One of the things we all find difficult is staying on track with the diet we want. Protein + Veggie meals for supper are often the norm and the broiled chicken breast with broccoli can get awfully boring. Don't neglect that BBQ sitting on your deck or balcony. Even plain old' hamburgers just taste better when they're grilled on the BBQ.

Poll Results - What rep range do you train in?

Last issues poll received a total of 310 votes, which is a record number! Below are the results of last issues poll.

What rep range do you normally train in?
1-3 reps
 [tally] 5%
4 - 8 reps
 [tally] 56%
9-12 reps
 [tally] 36%
12 reps +
 [tally] 3%

Over half of you train in the 4-8 rep range and over a third in the 9-12 rep range. ok.... Kind of predicatable, but interesting all of the same.

We have just put the following new poll on www.wannabebig.com

Do you have a cheat day?

Place your vote now, and see the results in the next issue of the Wannabebig Iron to Ink newsletter!

Website Review

In this issue, we are featuring johnberardi.com.

Dr John Berardi's website in particular is a big favorite of mine for a few reasons.

I want to start by going off on a little rant about most of the websites in the fitness industry. Stay with me… It's relevant, I promise!

A lot of websites in the fitness industry are awful. They have poor designs, bad usability, sell bogus products, offer poor advice and generally look seedy. The majority of this breed of websites have fluffy and inaccurate content which ONLY exists to push their bogus products. Number one priority, make money and screw anything else.

Dr John Berardi's website is one of the many few (along with Wannabebig and a few others of course) that is the exact opposite of this. There's no fluff, no B.S, it's just the real deal. The focus is on helping people, giving REAL advice and always looking to stay ahead of the game.

The design is awesome; you can tell that straight away. It has great usability and everything is organized well and it's obvious where things should be. The articles in particular are extremely good. I have always liked John's writing style. There's no beating around the bush, it's easy to read and just… well… makes sense! There's also a large range of articles, so you should be able to find something that interests you.

John's products are also great. We have already reviewed his No Nonsense DVD which John was kind enough to send us. He also has a new e-book out called Gourmet Nutrition which I am half way through already. Its an interesting read and an awesome reference.

The last thing I will leave you with is Dr John Berardi is a stand up guy.

Trust me, there are not too many of those about in the fitness industry. I am in regular email contact with him and we have worked together a few times and each time it's just been a pleasant experience. He is very highly thought of across the internet and the industry and with good reason.

So, www.johnberardi.com gets an official Wannabebig 5 stars out of 5 rating and is definitely one for your bookmarks!
