Review: John Berardi's Precision Nutrition
Introduction
You have a genuine desire to improve your health and athletic performance, but let's face it - you don't have a clue on where to start. The government recommends one thing, nutritionists recommend something different, and every book / article / website recommends something else. Every time you think you have a handle, a new study comes out and throws your world upside down. It's time consuming and frustrating.

This is where Precision Nutrition can help. It will teach you the habits required to improve your health, performance, and body composition. Not only that, but it will teach you how to implement those habits for long-term success.

Packaging
Precision Nutrition arrives in a binder containing 6 books, 2 DVDs, and 2 audio CDs. I won't go into detail on each book as the website already does an excellent job.

Precision Nutrition System Details

Overall the kit was well put together, but I would have preferred the following:

  • More organization between books. Precision Nutrition was designed to be a turnkey solution, but there was some overlap in content that made it feel like pieces were added after the fact. A revised edition could eliminate the overlap that would give a smoother flow to the content and therefore the steps involved in getting started.
  • Professional Binding instead of using a plastic binder. Gourmet Nutrition (one of the 6 books) comes professionally bound - I would like to see the entire kit use something similar.
  • Organize the content between the books and the DVDs/CDs as much as possible. I don't mind that there's overlap between mediums, but it's not entirely clear if the book contains info not found on the DVD and vice versa.

    Content
The content summarizes most of what we advise on the forums, so obviously it is brilliant! Seriously though, the content is gold. Here's the basic run down:

  • They convince you that worrying about details is stupid if you don't have a basic foundation.
  • They introduce you to the 10 habits. These habits are the foundation I was talking about above. They are very straightforward.
  • As if the habits weren't easy enough, they make things even easier. First they tell you about 21 "super foods." Then they give several examples of meal plans based around different workout schedules. And to top it off, they include THREE recipe books with some very serious kick ass meals. The cool part about the recipes is they are rated "Post Workout" and "Anytime" so you can easily replace meals in the template with meals from the recipe books. Very good idea!

    Implementation
This is where things differ from most nutrition plans you've seen. At first I was skeptical, but the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea. Essentially, you start off by learning the habits without worrying about calories. Blasphemy, I know! But hear me out.

What's the number one fear that people have when they realize they need to make changes to their diet? Counting calories!! This leads to huge problems. First, most people have NO clue how many calories they need or what types they need. Second, counting calories is a pain in the ass when you first start (it's true, don't lie). Now throw in the idea of switching to healthier foods and you end up with too much change too soon, and more than likely the plan won't be followed. The best plan in the world means nothing if you can't stick with it.

Yes it is true that a lot of us on the forums talk about certain minimums required for protein and fat. And those numbers are valid. But if you follow Precision Nutrition those numbers will be met.

    Results
Results are easy to demonstrate. Look at every single person who has good health, great performance, and excellent body composition. What do they have in common?

  • They are either genetic freaks that get away with anything, or
  • They follow most/all of the habits in Precision Nutrition

I challenge you to prove otherwise. :)

    Conclusion
Bottom line, this is an awesome system. Whether you have no idea what a carbohydrate does or you're an elite level athlete looking to take things to the next level, there's something to be gained from Precision Nutrition.

    HIGHLY recommended.

Fish Oil Rules by Dr. John Berardi

I consider fish oil to be an essential supplement for fat loss. Data from the University of Western Ontario shows that fish oil supplementation increases lean body mass (during non-dieting conditions), increases BMR (by up to 400kcal/day), decreases inflammation, and improves the ratio of fat/carb oxidized (sparing carbs, burning fat). Recommended dose: Start with 6-10g per day of total fish oil (assuming 30% EPA and DHA).

This tip is sponsored by Precision Nutrition - our pick for the best nutrition and supplement resource currently available. Precision Nutrition, complete with 2 DVDs, 2 CDs, 5 manuals, and an entire cook book, is the last word on eating for optimal health, body comp and performance.
