For a long time I used pinky on the ring but I have found a nice groove in going with my middle finger on the ring lately and seem to do better this way. I don't want to get to a meet and get redlighted because of my grip. But at the same time I don't want to train with an illegal grip either.

I believe max grip is index fingers on the rings.

You are fine...max grip is index on rings.

In the WABDL max grip is index finger must "abut" the rings. So it only has to touch them, not cover them. I think most other feds say index has to be on the rings. If you are with middle finger on the rings, you have plenty of room to move out farther.

Not all bars are made the same. An IPF legal bar has the rings at 32", which is the max legal grip (at least in the IPF). The cheapy bar I have actually has rings at 35", so I remarked the rings with a paint marker at 32".
