Going to start cutting soon.
What are the most important things I need to know with my diet?
I would appreciate any experience you all may have.

12cal X bodyweight is what I heard.

There is really only one "GOLDEN RULE" and that is you must expend more calories than you consume.
The idea is to tap into you stores of body fat, and if you have enough energy to fule your self then your body is going to use it, if you lower you calories and up the energy expendeture well you gonna metabolize fat.
AJ_11 I think that number is kinda high, that would be around 2,300 calories for me. If I want to cut up I go way less than that.

That number isn't too high. It depends on the person. 10 - 12 x bodyweight is the usual suggestion. I usually go with 12 for those who don't weight too much.
If I suggested 10 x bodyweight to someone who weighs 160 pounds, that would be 1600 cals, and I think that's too low. 12 x 160 comes out to around 1900-2000 cals, and I think that's decent, but still low if you plan to throw cardio into the mix.

It's always better to have cals too high at the beginning than too low. Also remember to make subtle changes to your diet, and don't drop cals too fast. I recommend trying to lose about a 1-1.5 pounds per week which would be equivalent to about a 500 calories less than maintenance per day.
