Alright, I'm looking for a quality weight gainer that isn't filled with sugar and empty calories. I already have a protein powder but don't think I'm getting nearly enough calories in my diet eating lean food like chicken breast and I don't want to resort to eating crappy food simply to get my caloric intake up because well, I easily become a scrawny blob.

I used to take Prolab's N-large II and put on some weight while taking it but it was 90% bad weight. I'm not sure if thats because of the rest of my diet or because of the N-large II. If I take it again, I guess I'll find out.

I've taken Atlarge's Opticen in the past and it tasted fine but I don't know if I can justify the price for only 23 servings and 300 calories. Also I'm unsure the quality of carbs in the product, I see 1 gram carbs, less than 1 gram dietary fiber, and I'm unsure what the other 23grams of carbs are composed of.

Any suggestions/testimonials on quality products or just some suggestions to get my caloric intake up through "whole foods". (I'll make a post, about increasing my daily caloric intake in a healthy manner, in the dieting forum as well.)

I currently eat daily;
Steel cut oatmeal
Lowfat Plain yogurt
Granola
3-4 Eggs
1-2 chicken breasts
Fruits
Veggies
Peanut butter
Whole wheat bread
Fat Free Milk
1-2 Isopure Shakes

Prolab Nlarge. If you put on 90% fat look at the rest of your diet. I'm even taking it now pre/post-workout while cutting for a comp. If you drank only Nlarge shakes, you would be fat. If you use it smartly while bulking, it can help get over thresholds.

I alos like Cytogainer, but kinda $.

Journal that logged calories.
You can take a look and analyze it if you feel so inclined to help someone in need out. If you're competing I figure you're knowledgable.

Thanks

The carbs in Opticen are maltodextrin.

You simply have to make the choice as to whether you want more, but lower quality carbs?

If I was looking to add more calories to the mix, I would drink Opticen, and have something with it to up the carb content. You could mix it with whole milk or just have fruit with it etc etc.. Again, yes, you would might throwing sugary carbs into the mix, but if your ultimate goal is to gain weight I wouldn't worry so much about it.

I guess what I am trying to say is overall I would prefer to use Opticen and throw in stuff around it to up the calories rather than use a traditional "weight gainer" which are generally just loaded with sugar.

By the way check out http://www.atlargenutrition.com/shakingitup.php

Opticen will give you as good as or better of a protein matrix than anything on the market.

Beyond that, if you are trying to gain weight the constitution of the carbs is not really that important. When people have trouble gaining weight they need quality protein and a high overall caloric intake.

When I was 18 and stuck at 180 lbs I made a conscious decision to eat everything but the kitchen sink and to drink a ton of milk. I would eat until I felt like I was full and then eat some more. I was able to go from 180 lbs to 220 lbs without adding too much fat using this method.

I was not worried about the "quality" of the food I was eating, only the quantity.

In retrospect, I believe that if I had the availability of the products that I now sell I could have added the weight quicker and gotten bigger with less fat. So, I don't recommend to others that they eat junk food to excess just to get calories but I also don't want young men trying to gain weight to obsess over where every calorie comes from.

Get some more opticen and mix it with whole milk and some sugar free ice cream. Make a 1000 calorie shake using these ingredients (1.5 servings of Opticen plus milk and ice cream) and drink at least 2 of these per day plus your normal meals and I GUARANTEE you will gain weight.

I tend to put on fat extremely easily, but I think I may give some opticen + fatfree milk + peanut butter a whirl again.

If that is the case then why use a weight gainer at all?

Weight gainer products are just protein powders with a bunch of carbs mixed in. In other words, they are protein powder plus additonal calories from carbs.

Tell me more about your situation and maybe I can offer some better advice.

Well I'm not getting enough calories as of yet, but when I was taking in 3000-3500calories a day, I put on weight but 99% of it was just fat.

I just want to get my caloric intake up without eating crappy calories.

To be honest you won't see a significant difference in storing FAT with different qualities of calories. ______ calories over maintanence is ______ calories over maintanence, whether or not they are from sugars or anything else is likely negligable.

Anywhere from 500-1000 cals.

Diet will look something like this;
1/2 Isopure shake + milk
3-4 Egg Cheese Omlette or 2-3 servings oatmeal
Non fat plain yogurt + granola
Weight Gainer shake

Workout

1/2 isopure shake + milk
Peanut butter + banana on whole wheat or Tuna + mayo on whole wheat
2 grilled chicken breasts/can of tuna/red meat
Random fruits and veggies throughout the day

Ok, then just mixing Opticen with some milk will do the trick to get you over the 500 calorie mark.
