Rippetoe or Bill Starr?
Hi. I'm trying to decide whether to switch my routine to either Rippetoe or the Starr 5x5. Both routines look good, but the Rippetoe seems aimed at beginners and the Starr at intermediate.
Ive been lifting for about 5 months, with a reasonable diet (bulking). I followed Chris Masons routine ('gain 15lbs in a month'), then switched to WBB1. Weight has gone from 154 at 5'10, up to 175 (a good bit of this is my new gut). Im still pretty weak in terms of numbers compared to most of you guys, but im much more confident on all the lifts now. My goal is to just gain as much muscle as possible. So, which routine do you think would benefit me most, Rippetoe or Starr? Thanks! Last edited by Beno79; 08-31-2006 at 04:46 AM.. |

Probably either one.

Despite popular opinion that I do not train
I am using the Starr right now and am getting great results.I have been on it consistently for 5 weeks and each week I have gained strenght and am feeling great about the whole thing. Takes a week ro so to get the process clear in your head but after that its smooth sailing. I haven't used or seen the other one so i cannot comment.

So, you've done two different programs in only 5 months. Why the desire to switch up so often?

i guess i just get bored easily! I was under the impression that chris masons programme was ideal for short term use, so switched to wbb1 after 8 weeks of it, thenm just got bored of wbb1! I was looking for other routines and rippetoe and starr just caught my eye, its the sort of training i would prefer to do, nice and simple.
Any ideas as to which programme i should go for? Im leaning towards rippetoe as I still feel like im a begginer, but any comments or advice on implementing and getting success from the routine would be appreciated. |

Well if you haven't seen this website yet, here is a good start to understanding Bill Starr's workout before you dedicate yourself to it. Also, you should read the training primer to further your knowledge on the game

So it is best to keep an open mind and be agnostic. At first sight that seems an unassailable position, at least in the weak sense of Pascal's wager. But on second thought it seems a cop-out, because the same could be said of Father Christmas and tooth fairies. There may be fairies at the bottom of the garden. There is no evidence for it, but you can't prove that there aren't any, so shouldn't we be agnostic with respect to fairies?" Richard Dawkins "Out of all of the sects in the world, we notice an uncanny coincidence: the overwhelming majority just happen to choose the one that their parents belong to. Not the sect that has the best evidence in its favour, the best miracles, the best moral code, the best cathedral, the best stained glass, the best music: when it comes to choosing from the smorgasbord of available religions, their potential virtues seem to count for nothing, compared to the matter of heredity. This is an unmistakable fact; nobody could seriously deny it. Yet people with full knowledge of the arbitrary nature of this heredity, somehow manage to go on believing in their religion, often with such fanaticism that they are prepared to murder people who follow a different one." Cheers for the link! Very useful info on the major lifts in there. I think im going to go with the Rippetoe program for now. Tried it on Friday, liked it! So ill stick with it for as long as i can, then maybe move on to the Starr routine.

Well, ive been doing Rippetoe for over a month now, and think its a great routine. The main thing ive noticed is how completely exhausting it is! I seem to get completely out of breath towards the end of the workout!
I guess its due to the combination of such taxing lifts, e.g. squats, bench and deadlifts one after the other. My workouts (either A or B) seem to only take me 40 mins. Is this normal?

Yes, 40 minutes is fairly normal. On deadlift days I take a little longer than that, but I'm always out in less than an hour.
Rippetoe rocks! |
